My Downtube never folded up on me, but my Dahon sure did

The original title and statement implies "Downtube good, Dahon dangerous." I consider this a simplistic and irresponsible representation which comes off as advertising. I fully realize - and stated - that Yan is not involved. In the future it would be better to accurately delineate the failure - if any - of the product involved, without weird claims about how it's so much inferior to a product not involved.

The problem with Dahon is they made too many models, some of them are good, e.g. speed p8 (could be steel material). On the other side, I have a MU SL bought from ebay, which has a very big gap in main hinge and keeps making terrible noises, I eventually resolved it by put couple of layers of tape on the contact area of the clamp. And there are many similar complaints on Internet. And yes the safety latch on the handle post is not solid enough and easy to break. I am always wondering why Dahon doesn't use clamps like those on Brompton for both main frame hinge and handle post hinge, that's a far more solid and simple design.

First .. sorry you had a fall and got hurt.
Lets forget the versus a to b and rather concentrate on the real reason why this happened, just to make sure it doesn’t happen to somebody else.
Couple questions, was it a used dahon which might have fallen through the cracks during their recall some 3 years ago ?
I would post a link to my technical pages on my website, but as a professional I do NOT link anything to my own website, not in the text and not in the signature as this is a violation to forum rules. I got banned for that reason twice, while others don’t seem to care.
I assume that the Teflon block broke completely and or the lever was not overcenter and latched into the safetyclip, in order for the plate which holds the handlepost could slip back far enough to open the latch? Maybe the plate was tight and did not move and hence it put undue stress on the Teflon block.
Again I would love to show a picture of the block …. But wont.
Here is the funky part of it all, I do sell these blocks ( in many cases I don’t actually sell them but rather mail at no charge ) However my records show that I might have sold a handful of these all last year, meaning that lets assume I am pretty much know for spare parts, there are very few which break or wear over the last decade or two …
This doesn’t mean that one should not check for wear and make sure that the locking plate moves freely and the block is adjusted to give the lever an over-center position, rather than being sloppy or rather than being so tight that the cam is not locking, if you hit it. Furthermore the use of the safety clip is absolute must. Its there for a reason.
If somebody is not familiar or has mechanical difficulties than please bring the bike to a dealer and have him adjust the clamp.

Thread is a good reminder to stop and check your bike before you get on it.
Thread is a good reminder to stop and check your bike before you get on it.
Especially important as things become more engineered and ridden harder.
Everybody knows to do it and not everybody does.
Always a good reminder
I'm assuming that the OP was describing a failure of the hinge system and stem.
More details and even pictures would sure help in guiding pre flight inspection that might be useful.
Aluminum sure isn't steel and weight (as well as wait) is often there for a reason.
I had an interesting conversation with the wife this morning over the difference between accident and collision, the latter becoming a more preferred term. The concept of negligence hovered in the wings..
Predictable but uncommon events require reasonable risk assessment and prevention.
Specifics sure would help here, as Thor implies.

now that i think about it, why don't you just start your own forum on your own website? it's pretty easy to do. then you can post all the sales pitches you want all day long. i'm sure enough novice cyclists will be attracted to it to make it worth your while. the added bonus would be you never have to come back to this forum, where you are so unfairly treated, ever again.

so, does that mean when you used to actively shill your products here on a daily basis you were behaving in an unprofessional manner? incidentally, i think you got banned because you were turning this sub-forum into your own personal business sales platform. also, this constant whinging you do about being unfairly treated by bikeforums while downtube posts his adverts with impunity is getting pretty tiresome.

Actually, more than a half of the posts in this thread turned way too personal. Maybe it's better for all us to give each other a bit more space to express our own opinions and be a bit more helpful instead.

small.... you must be an angry person, chill out. go and ride your bike, its really helpful. You are not the forum police, even if your contributions are many and they are appreciated.
as for dahon folding.... it works over a decade with millions of bikes out there. Millions !
Common sense and just little maintenance is required like any other bike as well, however.

Yeah, I overdid it a bit. I still think the original comparison of brands was ill-conceived, but I could have handled it better. I apologize.

it's pretty ironic that you're calling me "the forum police" when the majority of my posts in this thread are in defense of the OP against those who called for his posts to be deleted by... forum police.
at any rate, regardless of what you think about my tone, the suggestion i offered is a good one: start your own forum. it would benefit your business.
millions sold.. sounds familiar. i think most people understand intuitively that quantity doesn't equal quality.

I've owned several Dahons, and currently have a Curve D3. They work fine.

talk about hyperbole... the OP didnt actually say anything you just ascribed to him. and even if he had said those things exactly as you described, so what? it's still just an opinion being expressed.
it's really interesting to see how societal norms shift. recently right across all forms of social media we've seen people being silenced, shouted down, blocked, deleted, banned, barred... all because they committed the grave sin of expressing opinions that some group or individual doesn't like. its almost as if social media has infantilized it's users. they're no longer adults capable of offering counter arguments to ideas they dislike or simply ignore things they find objectionable.
instead of calling for mods to delete the thread, why not post a cogent, well-written rebuttal to the OP's "hyperbolic rant" for others to read? maybe that's too difficult.
