Dahon iOS D9 crankset upgrade

Sure, but we are up to 11-speed on both road and mtb parts now. I would not today, in 2016, recommend to anyone going to fewer gears than 10-speed when upgrading the drivetrain. Parts availability will only become even more difficult in time with 9- and 8-speed.

They still sell 7 speed bikes and you can get 7 speed parts. Not saying I recomend it but it is possible.

I didn't recommend upgrading anyone's drivetrain to a new 8 or 9 speed one. That would not be practical. I just clarified that there is some interchangeability with road and MTB shifter/deraillers which is in contrast to what was stated.

Every derailleur bike I own has 8- or 9-speed cassettes. Maybe if you're 20 you need to worry about these standards becoming impossible to replace someday, but you'll have long since purchased a new bike and it won't matter anyway. I would absolutely recommend someone buying new 8/9 stuff right now, but that isn't even the point of this thread.

8 sp has been very cheap for years now, no signs of supply stopping. 9 speed not as cheap yet and lots of premium cassettes for sale. No problem there. I recommend 9 speed. Lighter and cheaper than 10 speed. Chains last longer too.

You said you did not recommend 8- and 9-speed drivetrains. You and I agree.
Old MTB and Road components used to compatible. That's a statement of fact. There's no disagreeing to it.
what exactly is the problem? why are you fighting where there is no fight?

'Not saying I recomend it'
These are your words.
Spare me the nativist 'English is probably not your first language' condescension. It is. Don't let a multicultural, international upbringing lead you to unfounded conclusions.

This thread is devolving quickly. The OP wants a new chainring or crankset, and by now has probably decided what to do. Admonitions to completely upgrade his entire drivetrain are ridiculous; warnings about road/mtb compatibility and 9-speed availability irrelevant. Thank you and goodnight.
