An almost unused second hand Brompton got me back into biking, and now bikes are almost my sole form of transport. Folding bikes make it possible for me to own a bike in the first place. I live in a shoe box of an apartment, and wouldn't be able to store bikes otherwise. It's also a four flight walkup (the joys of city living), and a folding bike is easier to get up and down stairs. I rarely carry a bike lock. I've never locked up a Brompton at all. I now also have a Tern, which I lock from time to time, since it's bigger and harder to bring in places, and I tend to use it for longer tours. At 5'6", I think I'm about the right size for folding bikes. I'm quite comfortable on both the Brompton and the Tern.

I have too many folding bikes - at least a dozen at last count. But one of my favorite things to do with them is take one to a major European city I haven't visited before, and go alone. It's just me, the bike and the new city.
Haven't done this in the last decade - mainly because I don't have the income I used to - but it was a joy to explore. And of course, because I had a folder with me, can take it on pretty much any public transport anytime if I get too tired or just plain sick of riding because I've been doing it all day.
These days, I do variations on that theme. I took a little trip alone to northern Florida a few months ago, folding bike in tow. Santa Fe the year before that. So I still get around.

I recently got a used Giant FD 806, (to take along in the car on road trips) and find I am enjoying it more than expected. My regular ride is a Giant Escape hybrid, and I've found the more upright riding position a lot more comfortable for my elderly body. Another thing is I don't feel as diminished when somebody on an e-bike/carbon road bike/generally younger & fitter person whizzes by me. I just keep pedalling along, at my own pace, without the urge to keep up with others.

Man,
I so wished that I took photos/remember my photos from the original post. A folding bike is truly a great companion for a road trip. Santa Cruz is a great place for a road trip.
I rode to the local grocery store with my girlfriend on one of our dates. One on a xootr swift. One on the Brompton. Surprisingly, she found the Brompton way more comfortable (if way less efficient).
It was a beautiful crisp autumn day with sunshine as we enjoyed our beverages afterwards. Her, a hard cider. Me, some apple kombucha.
I'll be converting my Brompton to an e-bike as the rains roll overhead tonight.
