Dahon Speed - D7 vs. P8 for big guy?

I've read several threads on this comparison, but they're several years old and I can't be sure what's changed. For one thing, the prices seem to have gotten a lot closer over the intervening years, and I have to wonder if that partially reflects lesser quality of components on the P8? I wonder if the frames are now the same, as I thought I had read that the D7 previously used an aluminum frame - or was that only non-Speed models?

I largely see the tradeoff as having a higher top gear and ??? on the P8, while lacking the fenders and rack. I haven't kept up with bike tech, so can't knowingly compare, but am given to understand that the P8 has generally better components.

I don't ride much these days, and prefer an upright position for maximum visibility - mine ;-) I won't do curbs with this bike, but do take advantage of driveways and bike - er, handicap ramps in my urban explorations, and may be on unpaved rail or woods trails. I lead a group tour every summer, and partly want this to give me some afternoon riding in town and nearby after I drive the sag van to the lodging. I'm renting a new style van this year that doesn't have space for my LHT.

I'm 6' tall, right at the max weight of 230 for these bikes, and wouldn't want a broken seat post or frame. Will it be an uncomfortable / unstable ride? I have some balance issues. I'm aware of the higher-end bikes that are more sturdy, but just can't justify the cost based on expected usage. I'd be willing to get a decent used bike if I could locate one nearby.

Do you need to get these bikes inspected to validate the warranty - I've seen prior comments, but it's unclear just what the current situation is and if it applies to all models. I live in Boston, but wonder if there are benefits to buying from say ThorUSA vs. Amazon? It's not like I can go to Thor for service - or Amazon.

I'm uncertain just how much overall use I'll get out of this, and am curious if there are cheaper folders that would work for my size/weight? I'm willing to go with a 3-speed, but no less. Are there cheaper, but just as sturdy, Dahon models that I should consider?

thanks, Charles

In the past, the Speed P8 had double-wall rims and the Speed D7 had single-wall rims. If that's still the case, that factor alone argues for purchasing the P8 (especially at 230 pounds). I strongly recommend purchasing from ThorUSA if you are buying on-line or mail order.

Thanks - not only the rims, but the hubs and overall wheel quality looks a lot better.

I know Thor is on this forum, but I'm wondering if there are any benefits (for non-IL residents) in buying from him other than he supports the folder community?

I just noticed that the 2015 tangerine D8 is selling for about $100 more than the P8 - what's the cause of that?

Mine,, and I would not want the gear Inch range of the 7 speed.. the Speed P8 Is perfect and rides super nice...

I did upgrade the derailleur and shifter, the factory setup had horrible Indexing..

Jumping up on and off of curbs is great fun,,I ride light and trust these rims,,not a loose spoke yet..

osco - what did you use for the upgrades?

I hate grip shift, but resigned myself to it on a folder.

The other thing is that since I expect this bike will have limited use - I ride my MTB around town, I don't want to have to buy a lot of aftermarket parts for it. As much as possible, I'd like it to be ready to roll, although I'm certain I'll swap a seat off another bike.

==>> Does that tangerine D8 actually exist? I'm only finding it listed in some locations, and even Dahon doesn't seem to list it. Is it actually a D7 that someone was careless in listing?

I believe it has better tires, and it's just an outdated color perhaps? I'm not really sure otherwise,...

I could be wrong, but thought they just introduced the Tangerine in 2015.

Outdated colors wouldn't increase the price?

A few notes - Thor has it listed as the "Speed 8", and not P8. Elsewhere it shows up as a "Speed D8".

Thor has a note under it " *** see difference in spec "

However, I don't see any indication of just what the difference might be outside of " Please note: The 2015 models of te Speed 8 does NOT come with Big Apples anymore !"

My understanding is that the P8 no longer comes with these tires, and surely that alone would not justify the price difference.

So, I'm still wondering what the "official" designation of the Tangerine bike is, and just what justifies / explains its significantly higher pricetag than the P8?

I have sent a message to Dahon USA, so we'll see what - if anything, they say.

I have no idea what a landing gear is as it relates to a bike.

P8 also has SRAM.

Landing gear helps it land after a long flight

The speed 8 is a real bike the Speed 7 is not so real. I'd recommend you stay away from the 7sp.

Thanks,
Yan

You're right - I don't understand your announced departure, only to return hours later.

When you [/QUOTE] a person it brings them back into a thread/post. Is this sufficient information? Have a great shopping experience,...

I just noticed that Amazon has a few of these on sale for $478, so I went for it.
