Handlepost extension
Hi All
I have been getting sore elbows on my Dahon D8 as I tend to lock my elbows, I am 6.1 tall and I have been told to raise my handlebars allowing me to bend my arms, can you please recommend a good quality adjustable Handlepost that I can buy, Thanks

Yea you need a daHon seller , thru here he is who I'd ask, if i had one of those bikes..
Unless you have a shop to fabricate your own stuff..
I got an adjustable height mast thru buying a Bike Friday purchase, I think they got them from "satori " in Asia
but I cannot vouch for them fitting your bike.. steerer tube in fork 1" ID?

An Aber Halo extension will allow you about 3 cms forward extension or height ..and you can also then fit some different handlebars to give you more height or further forwards or backwards movement..You may have to shorten your existing handlebars if they are part of the handlepost..Cut them down to about 12 cms or so..and then fit the Aber Halo stem..I think ThorUSA has them and so do SJScycles in the UK..Done it to my old Phillips badged Dahon..works a treat..

A frame builder machine shop can make something Custom, just or you, as well..
FWIW, DaHon like other folding bikes makes 1 'size', Bike Friday makes 8.
& for the customer, after they order it.

Dahon's normally use straight handlebars. You can go to a rise bar and it will not affect the fold as much as other modifications.
Thanks

The Aber Hallo is a nifty idea because you can move the bar up, down and also forward and backward. I have one I bought to allow me to fold my Brompton with bull horns, and by replacing the handlebar post bolt with a QR no tools were needed. The are a little heavy but very stout. The riser bars could cost less and I am sure you could find some bars with similar rise to the Aber Hallo. A third option would be to put your seat as far forward as the rails allow. Some saddles have longer usable rails than others, although this option may make your ergonomics vis-a-vis the position of your knees over the pedals feel off. Lastly, by tilting the nose of the saddle even a small amount down, you may find the bars are easier to reach.

You may find the higher handle bar folds down below the Hitting the ground level when you do the folding ,
But If You are going to pick the bike Up and lay it on its side in the Car Boot(trunk) that wont matter .
When Brompton designed their H steering mast for taller riders they moved the Hinge Up half the increased Height,
so when folded the handlebar end just Touched the ground , like the other standard M model .

This is an important point, IMO. You certainly can raise the handle bar all sorts of ways; but how they interact with the fold may differ. That's the main reason to talk to someone like Thor who may have a neat alternative that integrates well with the fold.

Another solution is to buy a Brompton seat extension post..You can fit to a Dahon if it has the old fashioned fixing at the top of the seatpost..You can move your saddle 2 inches further forwards or back..I dont think SJScycles would ship one to the USA but a Brompton dealer there should be able to find one..Used one on an old folding bike I have and it can solve the problem in a different way to an Aber Halo stem..
