normal-sized frames converted to a travel bike

was talking to someone this weekend who mentioned something about converting normal-sized frames to a travel bike. i think he mentioned something that cuts the tubes and allows them to be reassembled. do such things exsist? would imagine it would compromise the strength of frame a lot.

S&S couplings are supplied by
http://www.sandsmachine.com/
They are highly regarded by many top frame-builders and do not compromise the strength of the bike.

After much research I am getting a bike retro fitted with the S&S couplers. You can also get a brand new bike made with them. Check out the link already posted above. That site has a list of several frame builders and a tons of reviews.
