    Handlebar bag for Bike Friday w/"H" bars?

    I'm curious if any Bike Friday owners out there have found a handlebar bag which works well with "H" bars (shaped like the letter "H" and they split in half for packing in a suitcase). I've got a New World Tourist, and the handlebar bags (old Ortlieb & ancient Kirtland) I had on my other bikes didn't work on my NWT for a variety of reasons: cables for brakes/shifters got in the way of the hardware; not enough space on the handlebars for the hardware; no place left for my hands; major pain when packing in the suitcase; or all of the above. All I've used for a handlebar bag is a cheap little bag which doesn't require any hardware to attach it. It merely uses a couple of velcro straps. It's OK for holding a camera, sunglasses, but not much else, and while it has a small map holder, I can't really read the map while riding because the bag hangs vertically, not horizontally.

    I searched through this forum and didn't find much regarding handlebar bags. Has anyone found a bag that works well with a Bike Friday, especially with "H" bars?

    I use this Sci-Con h'bar bag on my folder (not a BF). It's attached to the bar with two small plastic pieces that stay on the bars once the bag is removed. These are placed near the stem so plenty of room for hardware and they don't interfer with cables.

    Hey how do you guys like those H bars in general? I am considering one instead of my pretty light and very comfortable Dove bars. How do you think the (comparitive) weight, comfort, ergonomics and such are? Do they split easily? How does it work, does it require tools? No play after putting them back together? Thanks!

    I like the H bars. They separate in a few seconds with an Allen (aka Hex) wrench. There's a bolt on the underside of the top of the stem. They go back together just as easily. No play. You can also easily adjust the height and angle of the two outside parts of the H. I can't do a comparison, because the only Dove bar I know is the kind you eat.

    I gather from the very few responses to my handlebar bag query, that few BF owners have found an handlebar bag which works well with H bars. From the photo of the Sci-Con above, it looks like I'd have to take off the hardware when I split the H bars. I could live with that if they otherwise don't interfere with the cables & levers.

    The design of the splitable bars sounds very simple, could a little DIY turn almost any other bar into a splitable variant you think?

    Dove is like an Albatross HandleBar except the last ends of the tube are not perpendicular to the frame, the angle is more relaxed.

    ACcording to Rivendell:

    'Upright-Curved bars, such as the Dove or Albatross, are fantastic bars for comfortable upright riding, and for shorter commutes and all-around fun riding, can’t be beat. The curves give you a natural grip area, and in the case of the Albatross bar, the curve is long enough so that if you use a bar-end shifter or otherwise free up the bar in front of the brake lever, you get an additional grip, good for climbing. Some guys think these bars look like Old Lady bars, but they’re nuts. This is a fantastic design, and everybody reading this now has at least one bike that would benefit tremendously (and be a lot more fun to ride) if it had a curved upright bar on it. Bars of this type are almost always skinnier than drops or Moustache h’bars, and so require mountain bike brake levers and grips. That’s not a drawback, just a fact.'

    I actually also like them for touring. Mine is a special Dove variant that also curves down towards the stem, this gives you more height (and material of course) but also an altered position next to the stem, a really low one. This is position is pretty much as Aero as that of a drop racer.

    I tried the H bars for a couple of months and ordered a set of split drop bars. I've always been a road rider and my hands are use to drop bars. Maybe if I came from a mountain bike background it would be different...

    I solved my packing the handlebar problem without needing to spend loot on an expensive BF splitable. I wanted a longer and adjustable stem anyway for some time.

    Turns out the one i bought for about 16 Euros is not only adjustable but the bit that holds the bars consist of two parts and easily comes undone with an allen key. In effect this means i can remove my handlebar very quick for packing my folder. No more messing with cables, gear shifter, bell and handlebar foam for me! Great!
