    Swift folder fine tuning

    I am finalizing my order with Peter and could use some advice with the following,

    Since I have only test driven folders, I was wondering if is there a noticeable benefit in low gear range between 8speed 11 - 32 or 9speed cassette also 11 - 32 with 54 chainring. The 1st 5 gears would be identical.
    8speed 21 26 32 (51.4 41.5 33.8) versus 9speed 21 24 28 32 (51.4 45 38.6 33.8)
    As you can see there a more of a gradual difference with the 9 speed.
    Are there more mechanical complications with a 9 speed setup over 8 speed? So is it worth it?

    The Swift folder has the option of allen bolt or quick release for handlebars. Is there a definite advantage in having the quick release since I may fold the bike up once or twice a day?

    Hi stargazer,
    Mechanically, I don't think you have to worry about any major quality difference between 8 and 9 speeds. If it was a difference between an 8 and 10 speed, that's another story(10 speeds use a narrower chain). If you want more gears, I say go for the 9 speed.
    I don't own a swift, so can't really give an answer about the second question, other than to say if you plan on taking the handlebars apart on a regular bases, it sounds like the quick release might be better.
    I'm sure you'll get better advice about the quick release from other Swift owners,

    I personally would go with the 9spd in this instance. There isn't a huge difference in price and you may want the finer gear graduations. Since you are building something custom, why not go all the way? Easier to do it now than later and it will save you $$$.

    I personally would go with the 9spd and have a 34T big gear like the Megarange if it will fit. You are doing the dual chainring up front right? Maybe I am just used to having sort of a bailout gear because of some big hills and I don't mind spinning up hills and saving my knees. I don't know if something like the Megarange cluster will work. Regardless I'd go the 9spd. The chains work well. While at it I would suggest going to a Wipperman stainless chain as well. Great chains and reduced risk of corrosion as well.

    Go QR on the stem riser. It's convenient for times when you need to get a flat fold. When I board the commuter train, I quickly fold the bike, open the QR on the stemriser, slightly lift the bars up to release it from the centering notch, then rotate the bars towards the cranks and clamp it down. Takes me less than 10 seconds to do.

    On mine, I went with the 9spd 11-34 and a 58t chainring using a SRAM X-7 derailleur and like it a lot.. I would also recommend highly a 'thumb shifter' as opposed to a twist shifter.. They're cool and shift rapidly making you feel a little like a Ferrari driver using their steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. I would also recommend the QR for the handlebar for the same reasons as given in other posts.

    I had planned to get a 9 speed 11-32 but Wav suggested going to a 34. Peter from Swift is using sram x.9 deurailleur. Anyone know if the derr will handle 54/39 chainrings with the 9th speed 34 cog. I pose this question here as Peter is very hard to reach for timely questions and answers. I also like to hear varied opinions here.

    Compatibility: 9 speed drivetrains Max 34T cog (long cage) Max 32T cog (med cage)

    I had requested the Deore brakes be upgraded to XT. I had "ass"umed that would have included the levers. It didn't. Now, it going to cost another $55 + labor to replace the current levers. Peter thinks, it's not worth the money to upgrade as he thinks the regular Deores are fairly sturdy. When I compare the 2 web images of the levers. the XT appears to be sturdier. Of course, appearances can be deceiving. Are there enough additional benefits to warrant the upgrade? Will the XT take a lot more stress? The folder will be my only bike for a long time and I will be putting in some serious annual mileage.

    Any opinions will be appreciated.

    Personally, I think that so long as you put your money into the brakes themselves, the levers shouldn't really matter. The el-cheapo Tektro levers on my Swift are sturdy enough, and given that Shimano makes quality stuff to begin with, your Deore levers will be solid for a long time. Remember that we're talking about mountain bike components here, so they're already built beefy from the start. Assuming that the majority of your miles on the Swift will be road miles (i.e., you won't be jumping stumps or screaming down fireroads and singletrack through mud and loose gravel), then the Deore levers are probably way over-spec'ed for the type of riding you will be doing. Save your $55 and buy a multi-tool kit, spare tubes, and a pump.
