Folder and Trailer

How many of you use a trailer with your rides? I have a BOB that I have enjoyed for close to ten years, and I am thinking about getting a Burley Nomad. There is nothing like the ease of touring or haulin' stuff around town with your trailer! I even have used it to take my drumset to practice during the middle of commuter traffic, and it still felt comfortable (except for the stinky exhaust). I will be pullin' BOB behind my little folder for a couple week long tour so I'll let you all know how it works out.

i was using a actionbent trailer (like BOB but folds) with my bike friday until i got freaked out by all these people telling me that i shouldn't because of the torque on the chainstay.....

anyway, i now have a burley flatbed which i pull with my bike friday that i actually prefer to the singlewheel, primarily because it is easier to load and disattach and doesn't twist the entire bike when i have a heavy load...

What I like about the BOB is it easily fits in my duffel bag. It isn't quite as stable of course when heavily loaded but I don't mind as it encourages me to not over stress my folder AND it is narrow enough to fit through tight openings that a wider trailer wouldn't. I tour a lot in/around/through cities and the BOB is a better choice than a wider trailer. Couple that with the dry bag and it is a good choice for a lot of my travels. Not saying there aren't better options but the BOB has been good to me so far.

To travel I take off its wheel and front gooseneck. Through the wheel in my suitcase with my folding bike and the BOB in a duffel bag and my clothes in its dry bag. If I need to ride off from the airport out comes the bike from my suitcase. On goes the BOB. On the BOB goes my suitcase with tiedown straps and the dry bag goes inside my suitcase and off I go in about 10 minutes after baggage claim.

Wav, Aren't you using a large 31 F'Lite suitcase in your air travel?
How are you positioning the large suitcase on the BOB ? How do you prevent the trailer in your duffel bag from being damaged during baggage handling? For someone who doesn't have a BOB (me), wouldn't a BF type trailer be more preferable?

SG - I have several suitcases I use. I just stand the suitcase in the trailer and tie it down. Problem I have with the F'lite is that sometimes it doesn't work as well as smaller but more flexible suitcase so I often use one of my Briggs and Riley bags depending on what I bike I have with me.

The BOB is very durable and I've had no issue so far with it in a duffel bag. It has survived with no issues as the frame is pretty sturdy and I have clothes packed in the duffel bag anyway. I like the BF arrangement but the total hard cases (I have 29" Oyster and 31" F'lite) don't work as well for my Bromptons as my Briggs and Riley. I have to put more pressure (but not extreme) to get them to close in the bag. As a result I am going with a Brompton B bag and a little extra padding from now if I bring a Brommie.

Is there a better wheel available for a BOB than the (heavy!) plastic OEM wheel?

Plastic wheel? My BOB has a 16'' wheel with alloy rims. I added a Scwalbe Marathon that has lasted for almost ten years!

Mine has a 16" wheel which I did the same but with a better tire than the semi-knobby it came with.

I found that handling was dramatically improved when I shortened the yoke (see my Birdy or Trailer pages)
