Shifter style is mostly a matter of personal preferance. I have tried both basic shifters-gripshifters, stem mounted ones, handlebar mounted thumbshifters, downtube mounted, etc. and the ones that wins hands down-and are installed on all my bikes-are the simplest ones the oldest but the most safest and reliable handlebar mounted thumbshifters.
