How long have Swift Folders been around?

Yesterday in Hoboken I passed this chained-up bike that I was pretty sure was a Xooter Swift. But it either was at least ten years old, or the owner had made it up to look ten years old as a theft deterrent (all that was visible on the frame was an 'e' where I figured Xooter had once been). Have Swifts been around that long?

I know of an article written back in 1997 about them so that is about 9 years. I think it was in the summer back then. It was the Swift then and steel framed. The later ones are Aluminum.

Well, there is no "e" in Xootr (or Swift) so that couldn't have been it. There's a brief history of the bike here:

Actually the custom Swifts from Peter have the text "Swift Folder" on the side, so there IS an 'e' there! Check out this rather nice steel frame Swift: http://james.architectureburger.com/swift.html

I looked at the custom frame--the one I saw had all the letters intentionally (?) blacked out save one 'e' on the left side of the frame, which would have been around the spot of the 'w' on the right side...looks like it could have been it!
