A little seat-post extension

For those on folders looking for some extra height, I found a link to this in the Mechanics forum:

Oooh...that's really ingenious. I think Yangmusa would be interested in something like this. Thanks for posting!

BigMAcFU, this (folding) is one of the applicatiosn for which I asked for others ideas in the other forum. Credit goes to LWaB.

Just what I need, but how does one order/purchase it? I keep getting a "not found on this server" page.

BigMacFU 12-30-06 01:24 PM

They don't take web orders, you submit you want to order something and they contact you supposedly after 24 hours. They do handle international orders though. Jasong, I wrote I found the link in the mechanics forum, I just knew that people don't always check other parts of the forum out.

I asked them (sidetrak) for a paypal invocie (send request to contact info listed on mainpage); total was $29 shipped. Will let you guys know when it arrives how it appears.

Awesome, I'm really interested, keep us updated!

Yangmusa pulled-up beside me on his Swift at the train station the other day with one of these installed under his saddle, and I must say it looks very trick, and smaller than it does in pictures. Expect a review from him soon. ;)

BigMacFU 01-09-07 02:42 PM

excellent, can't wait, I've been wanting to bite the bullet, but am awaiting review

This was posted by yangmusa in the Swift thread, I'm ordering one tomorrow!

Check out this page at Sidetrak.com It's basically a steel spring with urethane dampers, so it does something similar to the Cane Creek Thudbuster.

Unlike the Thudbuster, it is not intended for offroad use - instead of several inches of travel, it has 6 mm. The urethane is also very stiff. It doesn't sound much, but from a week of riding it I can say that I'm starting to like it. It takes the brunt off the worst bumps & potholes here in SF, and seems to remove some road buzz from the aluminium frame.

My kitchen scales say it weight about 250 g (just under 9 oz) - about a quarter water bottle.

James_Swift wondered if it starts moving or oscillating when spinning at high cadences. The answer is, I can't really tell. My spinning technique is lousy and I just start bouncing in the seat. But I don't think it does, at least not as I can tell.

So all in all, it doesn't perform miracles, but it does seem to reduce the worst bumps. I hope it will reduce fatigue on long rides. I've signed up for the San Francisco to LA Aids/Lifecycle ride, and am considering doing all 545 miles on my Swift :)

Edit: I find that it works best when I'm sitting relatively upright. When I'm on the drops I have much less weight on the seat, and I don't notice it doing so much. YMMV.

Just an update now that I've ridden on it for a week: I ordered this because I wanted a little more height and that's just what I've gotten. I've got the Thudbuster XL as my seatpost and didn't need the suspension the "Butt Buddy" brings. But, with a 450mm seatpost and my 6' 0", I couldn't get those last 2 inches of height necessary. The "Butt Buddy" added about 3 inches of height, which allowed me to no longer put the seatpost at full extension, I've got it an inch more down than the max limit.

So, if you need that extra little bit of height, which can be a problem with folders if you want more of a road bike geometry, grab the "butt buddy." And they ship super fast (got from Seattle to NYC in 1 day priority mail).

How long does it usually take for them to respond?

-G

EDIT: I tried to use the web application to contact them, but that returned an error. Instead I sent them an e-mail and FAX. Did anyone else have the same experience?

jasong 05-08-07 07:30 AM

I think I had mine within a week of contacting them

It took a week for them to respond or a week for you to receive something?

BigMacFU 05-08-07 08:26 AM

They called me the day after I faxed an order. Had the product very soon after.

invisiblehand 05-08-07 09:03 AM

Hmmmm, hopefully they call me today. This will be three business days.

invisiblehand 05-10-07 02:39 PM

Still have not heard anything from them. Now something is going on with their website.

jasong 05-11-07 06:28 PM

Between contacting them and having the product, asked them to send me a paypal invoice with the form

Still no word from Sidetrak. My guess is that they went belly-up ... or hate Beltway Bandits.

invisiblehand 05-24-07 01:27 PM

Hey everyone. They called while I was in Santa Fe. I just placed my order with them.

For anyone who has one... Is there any way of switching to a softer bumper?
