Brompton News

Announcement pilfered from the Folding Society.

The only major news seems to be the demise of the C-Type, and the simplification of the model range:

12 April 2007
NEW MODEL RANGE, NEW PRICES

by Brompton

We are in the process of redeveloping our website, which means that the model and price information found here is no longer 100% up-to-date. The new website should be up and running within the next two months but the main changes as of April 2007 are: - S and P Type models are now priced much nearer to the M Type; - Superlight: the full package of titanium parts has been reduced in price; saving 1kg in weight now costs just £400; - 3 & 2 Speeds are now priced the same; - 6 Speed: upgrading from 3 to 6 speeds is now cheaper, at £50; - Racksack: we have launched a bag designed for the Brompton rear rack. With the sides lined for stiffness and priced at £50, it is the perfect solution for those who want their rear luggage stored in a secure, shower-proof holdall; - C Type: This model has been discontinued - the closest model to the C Type (but far superior in most respects) is an M3E without folding pedal, at £458; - Key models: we have moved away from the confusing offering of 10 standard models and replaced it with three key models: one for each handlebar style. Each of these three key models (S2L, M3L, P6R) is also available in superlight specification (S2L-X, M3L-X, P6R-X). All the key models come fitted with lighting as standard. Please remember that B-spoke (formerly known as A La Carte, or ALC) custom-built Bromptons take no longer to build than any other order placed with us. April is also the start of our financial year, so prices have changed - as always, some features and parts have gone up, others down; however, prices overall are up by about 2.4%. For full details of all the changes to our range and prices, contact your local Brompton dealer or distributor. Prices quoted above are UK RRP and will of course vary from country to country.

I think the bigger announcement is that they're going to update their website. Won't believe it 'til I see it, though.

It must be a joke about the web site...but bringing the 10 confusing standard models to 3 and their equivalent upgraded versions to a coordinated naming was a wise decision. the S2L must become my favorite now (light, sporty and simple).

The C type has been discontinued? I am rather surprised at Brompton for eliminating a good model to introduce one to the Brompton world. I like mine for it's simplicity and lack of things that I already have or have any use for (like a pump or lower gearing at 46t for the chain ring). I hate the red color, but have made peace with it now. I will be adding a new Brompton in the far future (2 or more years away) and this present bike is fine in the interim.

The C-type doesn't sell very well in Britain and, to meet the price point, the equipment level is low enough for Americans to complain...

Where is the cheapest place in the states to buy the least expensive Brompton?

I'm looking for a base model to experiment with.

Although the best modifications are done in Europe. It can be difficult to find them here.

I honestly don't feel the need of a higher stem @ 5'9". What I would love to have is:

1-a Brompton size once folded;

2-a Brompton Wheelbase;

3-V-Brakes (or any other effective system);

4-higher gear than Brompton (not necessarily more gears, 3 would work, 6 would be better, Rohloff 14 if unlimited budget was provided)

5-light components (XT brake levers, XT cranksets, XTR if unlimited budget was provided).

6-a custom hard-case that would fit the bike PERFECTLY inside with no room for destruction.

I would be a happy man.

How much do you want to pay?

Looks like you might need to remove the pedals. Maybe right and left folding pedals would work, or just put on some MKS quick-releases.

Since they're made in China, maybe other folder forumites who go/live there can source you one for cheaper.

I would rather have the bike first, then go after the Suitcase

Beltdrive is cool, but I am not sure they are the best to use out there. Can't be fixed and as far as oil goes, the Brompton design keeps it pretty decently away from you once folded.
