    Friday footprint seen!

Like Robinson Crusoe I have seen evidence that Friday is near. My Bike Friday has crossed the border and is with Fed-EX in Canada. They're faxing me the paperwork for customs fees. I cringe at the prospect. There may be $200-$300 in import duties to pay.

Unfortunately Canada charges a ridiculous 13% import duty on bikes. I hope they just charge based on the bike and not the travel case, etc.

Really? I just bought a bike from US. The origin is marked as USA. There was no import duty charged. Only the sales tax.

Too late...it's in Canada. Toronto is about a 2 hour drive from Buffalo, so it wouldn't normally be worth it to ship goods to some location there and drive down to pick them up. Plus, I'd have to smuggle the bike across the border and that could end up being serious.

I hope that is the case. If it is a new bike they are supposed to charge the duty.

The bike I bought was a brand new bike. I truly hope there won't be duty charged on yours.

It's a Bike Friday NWT and the total sale price with the travel suitcase and all accessories was over $2000. If I get charged 13% and sales tax 7%, the total tax/duty could be over $400.

Shoot, I'm heading up there soon and would have brought one with me. My neighbor is a BF dealer, too. Next time, just post! That's what the community is for.

Now if someone would bring me a Bianchi Fretta back from Japan!

Good thinking. Next time when I go back to China, I am going to bring a Dahon Curve D3 back. Just saw some Chinese website that sells a new SP8 for 2000 yuans. That is less than US$270!

Yeah, I was there a year and a half ago and saw a Picalo for $170. Of course, the Yuan was even weaker then. Now, all the good deals are in Japan!

Got my bike Friday on Monday and put it together too late to ride much. It was dark and the bike needed some fit tweaking. Tuesday I work late, so Wednesday I got out and finished adjusting the fit and make sure all the gears worked etc. So far so good. Late meeting Thursday and home late-ish Friday. Really looking forward to taking it on a longer jaunt tomorrow.

In terms of duties and taxes, Fed Ex billed me for federal GST and Provincial PST totalling 13%, but not the separate bike import duty of 13% that could have doubled the tax. Still $317 was a big chunk to pay!
