Shifter for Nexus 8sp

I want to convert one of my folders from derailer gears to Nexus 8R25 8sp premium, and have a good deal from JensonUSA; however I am having trouble locating a shifter for it. Jenson USA have twice not responded to my question regarding this, and I have not found other vendors. It would be disadvantageous to buy the shifter from one place and the hub from another.

So, here is my question:

* Are the Nexus hubs really still in production? If shifters are hard to come by, then perhaps not. Also, the Alfine 8sp hub is supposed to be better but absolutely no luck in locating any, nor its shifter.

* can anybody recommend a dealer to me who stocks both hub and shifter? Alternatively, can someone find the shifter in jenson's catalog, since I am unable to?

Thanks in advance...

Hi Jur... try These Guys.. I bought two premium 8spd hubs + shifters from them... looks like the price went up a shade since I got mine, but it also looks like there is a thumb shifter+brake lever option that I didn't have when I got mine...

SWEET! Thanks for the heads up on the deal from JensonUSA! I am going to order one as soon as I get these questions answered.
1) How is the Alfine hub better? Last I heard it was just disc brake compatible.
2) Is it possible to use a bar end shifter for the hub? Would you recommend it if it was possible?

No overseas shipping unfortunately with these guys.

Harris is a possibility, but last resort as they are quite a lot more expensive.

Information is scarce regarding the Alfine hub, but I understand shifting under load is improved. Not that it seems to be necessary though - the 8R25 is already quite good in this department. Weight and efficiency may also be improved. But perhaps the biggie is a better shifter.

The Afline weighs 1590g, 50 more than the nexus. The site quotes the Alfine as having the "highest shimano internal hub efficiency" and has "double roller clutch for smoother, quieter shifting".

Hmmm... If Shimano is phasing out the nexus 8, methinks I should weight till prices fall. What do you think?

About purchasing the Afline, I've come across posters in the touring/cyclocross forum who have their bikes draped in Alfine, and with pics too.

There is a pic of the Alfine shifter here on this page, scroll down.
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=249842
It is a trigger shifter like XT, but looking a bit sleeker.

The Nexus pushbutton shifter is integrated with a brake lever, that sucks.

On that page, it is mentioned that the internals for Alfine and Nexus may be the same.

Maybe you can buy the hub from one source and the shifter from Harris Cyclery. This way you compensate them for any information they pass along to you.

Surely the upgraded Alfine is an additional price point product. Do you have some information about a "phase out"?

re phasing out: It seems that the various Nexus bits are hard to buy these days. The rotary shifter is just not on Jensons' catalog. The button one is but it has the brake lever built in. Aebike replied they are not selling Shimano stuff right now. The Alfine is nowhere to be found. All this seems to indicate that Shimano may be consolidating their hub equipment. Or maybe they have a 9sp waiting in the wings to compete with the also-unavailable SRAM 9sp.

Very frustrating.
