    Anyone tried to board a plane with a folder as 'carry on' luggage?

    just wondering if someone has tried...

    If you tried that on way out of Uk at the moment you'd probably be machine gunned down !!

    Check some old threads on that very topic. I believe someone got a Brompton on and J. Gaerlan built a bike for that very purpose.

    Someone on this board is an airplane pilot and regularly takes their Brompton as carry on luggage. Sorry, forgot who it is... but keep in mind, he is a airplane captain... so it could be a perk...

    As long as it fits within the space limitations I can't see why not. They don't have any liquid on them and are not flamable. You'd probably have to disassemble most of the bike to get it that small though.

    yea, the metal is what i wonder about. i tried to take a tent on a plane and was refused as they said the poles could be used as a weapon. how stupid.

    Yep, in most of the world today I can't imagine you will get past security with a folding bike.

    I couldn't even carry a stupid cable lock onto a plane 3 years ago in Belgium....

    If you decide to bring your Brompton on board and they rejected the bike, you may very well miss the flight. If your brave enough, you'll just have to drop the bike into the hands of the handlers AS IS with just a thin cover! Hope those guys treat your bicycle with care.

    The master plan is to arrive way early, with an extra luggage and extra time to go back to your vehicle, pack the bike and check it in in case of a rejection. I will try this in one of the less-formal flights I take in the U.S.

    You can carry on a stroller so why not a bike?

    wrong with the stroller ..... you can take a stroller or wheelchair all the way into the gangway but there you have to leave it and hope that the airport gorillas will grab it and stickit into the planes belly ....

    same on the way out of the plane.....ever wondered why it takes so long before people start debarking the plane .. the handlers need to bring the strollers back out before the people are allowed to go out ....

    Hum, interesting Thor. I just flew to Vermont last week but we used the Baby Bjorn to make screening easier. I guess if you have them in the baby seat or stroller you need to pull the kid out and run the equipment through the machine. You don't need to do that with the Bjorn.

    It is good to note though since my kid's stroller costs more than my bike I'm sure the wife wouldn't want it smashed up.

    I was under the impression that these strollers were checked at the gate and stored in the cabin near 1st class. This way when you exit you can grab the stroller on the way out and not have to wait for the ground crew to unload the luggage before you can leave the gate on arrival.

    I'd like to say that its not the families with really young kids that delay the disembarking process. We usually are fast as lightning because the little one usually unloads her last meal into her pampers after they turn on the seatbelt light for the decent. Many folk have learned its best to get these kids off the plane ASAP.

    My theory is that there are many older people or people with disabilities that have trouble lifting their luggage into the rack while able bodied folk watch them struggle.

    I, too, have mused on the overhead cabin folder, but I think TSA makes it more trouble than it's worth. Moreover, if you're taking a folder, you're almost always going to have checked bags anyway. If it's a regular trip, esp. a commute, keep a second bike at your destination. Street design and traffic near airports are generally very hostile to bicyclists.

    I made a decision a while back that if I do travel again on the major airlines or even some trains like Amtrack, I would either leave the bike at home (the safest place), take the older folder with me in a hardened suitcase, or rent/hire a bike at my destination. The reality is...it is a different world now.

    Thinking about it, actually it makes more sense to check in the folding bike and "carry in" the other luggage.

    If you're going to carry the hard case, why not just check the bike in and be done with it? After all, once the hardcase is taken away, you're not going to able to bring back to put your bike inside. Should they turn you away at the last minute, you'll have to rush to get the bike in the hardcase and have it checked it all the while everyone is boarding.
