Protecting a Dahon 20" when flying???
I've just ordered a Dahon MU SL and I'm looking forward to many happy miles on it.
But if I want to take it on a plane, what's the best way to protect it???
Can anyone recommend a good value bike case or has anyone got any other innovative solutions to baggage handler abuse. I don't really want the bike to come out the other end any smaller than it already is!!!
(The Dahon 'Airporter' case looks great but is ridiculously expensive and weighs more than the bike!!)
i used a canvas duffle bag padded with cardboard and the airport beat up my boardwalk.
so i never traveled with my boardwalk again..
so i got an old classic dahon and travel with that now..
they still beat it up, but i don't care..only paid $25 for it rusty ....but i've cleaned it up..
the soft bag is so easy..and i don't have to disassemble the bike..
the best way is get a 30" hardcase that under 62" overall..if you disassemble the bike..
thats if you want/need to take a good bike with you..
got my hardcase used from a thriftstore..already broken in..
i've got a mu sl also which i don't travel with becuz i don't have to worry about the abuse..
it's less of a hassle ...if/when... they lose my luggage or theft..
but just in case i do want to take a good ..i'm ready to go..
search the old posting for more on the hardcase..it's addressed over many times..
From Oz to the land of the Irish...
on arriving the box look perfect with not a mark on it, the bike came out with out a mark on it.
On the way back on the same airline [Virgin A] it looked like it'd been run over by a steamroller.
Needed [and got] a new paint job and new derailer front and back and a wheel rebuild.
Seems to depend on who's having a bad day
from all the times i've waited for baggage claim.. seen stuff.. lots of..
stuff come down the belt... torn-up, beat-up, and loose.. and busted open..etc..
i don't trust to check-in anything you can't/won't care to lose or break..
airport workers in the back are rough..
the only time they are careful ..is at check-in.. cuz you are watching..
i use to work for TSA as a screener.. when i had to work in baggage screening..
for a little while..in the back room..
i've seen the guys in the back room..throw the bags on the belt..after inspection..
kind of like that old commercial for luggage with the ape.....
but i've also worked for UPS... same stuff..
get the idea now ?
fyi.. travel with a beater folding bike..
thanks for the advice
i think i'll maybe reconsider taking it with me unless i can get some seriously heavy duty protection for it
