    found dahon

I picked up a dahon and can't find an owner, it was left over night in a parking lot. I'll wait a few more days before claimong it, but have gotten interested in fixing it up. It would be great for a person I know without a car. The wheels look like they have had better days. The spokes are loose with space showing around the rim. I assume the spoke holes have become worn or inlarged. The bike is a single speed getaway. Any info would be great. I haven't found anything of use doing searches. Things like possible age range to places for wheels etc.. I have no experience/knowledge with folding bikes. Thanks

Thank God you found it. I wonder how I left it all the way down in Texas? PM me for my mailing address.

Seriously, is it not locked up? Did you take it home?

The bike is in the garage. I ask other teachers and checked the 2 LBS no luck yet on a owner. I would love to get it to its home. I'm afraid it was stolen some time in the past as the nuts have been worked on with pliers and some wire is on the coaster brake arm (name?) and a little rust on the frame and wheels. Is there a home for orphaned Dahons?

I think you're doing the right thing; asking around the LBSs, maybe posting an ad in Craigslist and just seeing if anyone claims it. Only you can determine a fair waiting period. If it were me, I'd take it home and clean it up and if the owner returns, you've done him/her a favor and if no one claims it, you're done well to make it road worthy.

Some people view this as theft, but I would prefer that someone who finds an abandoned bike put it to good use rather than it end up in a landfill. I wonder if the people who disagree would leave a $20 bill they found lying on the sidewalk since they are not the 'rightful' owner.

If I were to lose a bike or have a bike stolen, I would report it as lost or stolen with the police. I wouldn't go contacting all of the bike stores in my area. I'm guessing then that if this were my bike, it wouldn't get returned to me

I did contact the police and ask 2 officers that are at the school. They all took the attitude that it was stolen and next to impossible to find its owner. I was told no reports had been filed matching the bike. I would prefer to find the owner as I had a bike stolen many years ago and didn't like it. One bike shop said they never get people asking if a bike had shown up.

Based on your description the bike is probably not worth anything in terms of money (actually a negative sum is most likely). Buy a new bike if you want to save money. If you want to learn about bikes, it is worth bringing it back up to speed. It is also possible to trick it out with parts or your choice. I suspect the owner just dumped it. Look for engraved police numbers on the bottom bracket ect. Perhaps leave a note where you found it.
2000 Montague CX, I do not recommend it, but still ride it.
Strida 3, I recommend it for rides < 10mi wo steep hills.
2006 Rowbike 720 Sport, I recommend it as an exercise bike.
    1996 Birdy, Recommend.
    Wieleder CARiBIKE (folding), decent frame.
