    Decals for a Raleigh 20...

Does anyone know if there are any New Old Stock Decals for a Raleigh 20 in existance? Or if there are any out there that are really good repros or Knock-Offs? I am doing a restore and I just wanted to know how dificult it might be to find em. Even if I get the bike powder coated or painted, I would still like to keep some of its original flare I especially like the decal that states the design number... Really cool.

Oh, and is anyone out there able to trace years of R-20's with serial numbers? After hearing about Sammyboy's Christmas surprise (stolen bikes) I figured I better write the serial number down on the R-20 Im working on.

Thanks for any help you fellas might be...

You might want to track down Michael Swantak.
But his site seems to be down at the moment.
    http://www.velographicdecals.com/

He specialized in bicycle sticker reproductions if I remember correctly, particularly vintage models.
Someone else noted on Dec 1 that his website was down, so I don't know what the story is.

I think his handle on BF might be "mswantak"

I too have considered decals for my R20. I found this product that claims to be able to print decals on to their paper using a standard inkjet printer. You then can apply it to most surfaces, including metal.

    http://www.lazertran.com/products/la...cts_inkjet.htm

It is available in 8.5x11 and 11x17. I would think that most of the decals for a bike would fit on an 11x17 sheet. It cost $35 for 10-11x17 sheets. I haven't tried it, but I am tempted.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

That looks like it would definitely work for someone who is painting their bike, You can just have them spray a couple coats of clear over it. I guess if it had a decent bond, it could be used on top of powder coat. It doesnt appear that the original decals are sprayed with a clear coat. A product like that is sold here in the Hobby Shops for guys who build models. I really wouldnt have issue trying a product like that, I would just need digital files or some hi res scans of the original Decals. I wouldnt know where to begin that search other than a guy I know who goes by "LittlePixel the photoshop Guru" Lil help?

When I look at the new Raleighs and their new logos, they are WAY TOO BRIGHT, and they say Raleigh USA or somethin' like that here. I Totally would need to put the "Made in London" decal back too! and the Model number with the braid around it... I could almost try to take a photo of it and then try to alter the rounded tube perspective in photoshop, but my Decals went 50% bye bye when I was trying to clean the frame (I was using a product called "Goof Off"). Just know that the decals WILL come off if you use any kind of cleaning product. (they are not clear coated, at least on my bike)...

There is someone who sells "Raleigh" repo decals on eBay. You will have to search for them. I bought a couple of sets from him, but, I was less than satisfied with the results. They are made from, apparently, very thin clear vinyl. However, when applying following his instructions to the letter, there was no way that those decals would stay the shape of the round down tube on my R20. They kept lifting and flattening back to their original flat shape. Not to mention that the seller accidentally cut off the sharp corner of one of the letter "R's" - but he did replace it. Just inconvenient to have to wait a couple more weeks for it to show up. Anyway, you can try your luck with those, but if they end up working like mine, chances are you will end up removing them like I had to.

Littlepixel, here on the forum used white vinyl to place his Raleigh brand name on his R20. Maybe something like that might work for you?

I have a friend that has a business making Vinyl signs so I have access to a Vinyl plotter, but if I go the route of decals, I want the bike (decal) to have a look like the original... I guess I may have to save the original look pipe dream for my Phillips 20. We'll see if there are any other sources or ideas out there...

Post some pictures, if you can, of the decals on the Phillips. Making a digital file, from which you can have decals printed, shouldn't be too hard, as long as the font isn't too funky. Unfortunately the frame decals on my Raleigh Twenty are in a font that would be very difficult to replicate, and they're silver, which would be tricky too. So if I repaint, historically correct decals will be out of the question. Still, I'll have to do something so it doesn't look naked.

The non folding Twenty I have had a really nice retro 'twenty' logo on it - albeit in a bit of a messy state. I intend to refurb the frame at some point so did a tracing of it which I duly drew up in Illustrator so I can make vinyl repros when I get around to it. I don't have the art here to show right now but would happily send you it - Vector art is the only real way to go with vinyl lettering.

Also - you can get a old-skool vector Raleigh logo if you search http://www.brandsoftheworld.com that you can open in Ilustrator/Corel or whatever and muck about with.

I actually have a few sets of NOS decals too but they are late seventies ones in yuk colours which would probably look a bit tacky for the roady style bike you are buiding.

Again our fearless leader LittlePixel comes through! I checked out that site and they had a blk/wht version of the headbadge logo. If you have some vector art of the other decals off of the bike, I'd definitely be interested. Are you still traveling? I might still try to use the wet aplication decal with a clear coat over it just so I can really stump the bike snobs around here...

Oh, RHM, you were asking about the Phillips Twenty that I have. That will be my next prodject. Its decals are in a lot better shape than the Raleigh Twenty. If any of you get the chance to see a Phillips, check one out. The Decals are really ornate and give the bike a real distingushed look.

    Huw, you are the man...
And RHM, thanks for always puttin' in a word...
I also wanna thank all of you on the site for helping people like me who have absolutely NO local support .

LittlePixel, Would you be willing to post the vector file you did of the "Twenty" logo you made? I wanted only one decal on my R20, and it is the word "Twenty" vertically on the seat tube. It would be a help if you have already done it. If not, is it in a recognizable font? Just knowing that would make it reproducible. You could PM me if that would work better for you...Thanks

Hi Sahadev; Naturally - it's no bother for me to send you the artwork (I'm home in just over a week - I'll post it to this thread so anyone can have it-I'll post up a preview for those without vector packages).

I should stress that it's quite an ornate rendering from a mid-70s UK bike, and not the chunky serifed version most often seen on US bikes. Perhaps someone else with one of those might be up to the job of tracing one of those? It could be one of about a million fonts so without one at hand to readily identify I wouldn't want to speculate, though an Egyptienne Slab Serif like Clarendon Black Italic might be a reasonable approximation.

To trace mine it I magic-taped drafting film (tracing paper) to the headtube and traced in pencil (This bit is fun!) , then scanned this in flat and redrew it neatly on the Mac in Illustrator using bezier-curve path tools. I have a specialism in typography so it was quite fun getting it as authentic looking as possible.

Bumping this as I finally got around to finding and posting the vector file.

Be warned - this is very much a seventies rendering and not maybe the 'classic' decal most people are used to but it's authentic as I traced it off the very frame of one in the shed.

This is the actual PDF vector file. Don't use the image above as it's way to low-res.

LP, thanks for the drawing. I captured it into Photoshop and them copied the individual letters of the word "Twenty" to CorelDraw. I am in the process of rotating and aligning them so that the word is oriented vertically. I will print it on decal paper and see what it looks like on my bike.

Thanks for doing the hard part for us all!

apart from the NOS brass head badge........I like to keep 'em guessing.
I was thinkin' about making up some decals with "il vespa" but I'm too lazy, however for SWMBO's R20, she particularily likes the funky 70's look, so yes, many thanks HUW.

Sounds like you did it the hard way. Can Corel not open Vector PDF files? It's a lot better as vector - no jaggies.

Well, when I imported it directly into CD last night I was unable to ungroup it into individual letters. That's why I went to PSE first. But I just imported it again into CD and, of course, it ungrouped just fine. Oh,well.

What kind of vinyl is used for decals? I have access to a laser cutter so I could cut the decals on that.

Not really sure about the kinds of vinyl but a local signmaker shop should be able to do it.

Something I read recently which is like the best of all worlds in terms of durability is to get a vinyl graphic made in the negative, and then once applied to the frame use it as a very accurate stencil over which you paint your chosen colour(s). Peel it off, add an overall coat of clearcoat and you're done.
