Downtube 8H vs. Dahon D7
I am considering getting a folding bike - my first bike in years. The Downtube 8H and Dahon D7 are in my pricerange. Different bikes - it seems like with the Downtube, you get more for your money - basically an internal hub. But am I missing something? Is there a reason to go with the Dahon instead? Any thoughts on these two bikes appreciated. For a novice please. (I live in a NYC apt., so space is a consideration - I might use it for commuting occasionally to work - about 10 miles - but might need to carry it back on the subway). Thanks

I think the internal hub would work better for city commuting. The Downtube uses more standard parts then the Dahon. The 8HN is a steal of a deal right now and blows away Dahon as well as others.

I think you should let your wallet decide - if you can get a good deal on either then snap it up.
I have a Dahon D7 and could not be happier with it. I've had seized nuts on the rear wheel but this may be down to how the bike was stored by the shop I purchased it from, or some other cause. It's not an issued with Dahon's as far as I can ascertain. I hear very good things about the Downtbue 8H and would have considered one too but I got a great discount on my D7 (about 28%). Recently I've heard off some mechanical problems with Downtubes - broken spokes, faulty stems, etc. Could just be funny timing - you would do well to get a range of views but I think you can't go far wrong with either bike.
The D7 a joy to ride, very nippy and comfortable - I haven't gone over 25 miles yet but that's due to time constraints, I'm sure I could do 50 and feel just fine. It lends itself to an upright riding position which was part of the appeal for me - I'm into enjoying my surroundings and fun/leisure riding first and foremost. Commuting to work should be a breeze.
It feels very well put together, nothing feels cheap or compromised and it's a remarkably stable and smooth ride. The build quality feels top notch and the folding mechanism is acceptable - not the fastest in the world but I think about 25 seconds or so is realistic, unfolding is quicker. Friends have tried it out, with a view to ridiculing my 'dork bike', and all have handed it back with nothing but praise. I know at least one person saving for one.
Regarding a case you might like to ask around for recommendations. I got a bundle deal with the El Bolso carry bag. It's ok but the over the shoulder arrangement feels a bit like carrying the worlds largest handbag.
