Folding bikes on ac transit buses?
Hey,
I've been looking at folders recently and was curious if anyone here is from the SF bay area/east bay and if they have taken their folders onto ac transit buses? i know on paper it says they are ok to bring on, I've just never seen anyone have one inside.
I was thinking of a folder cause 1-2 times a week while commuting to work i have to skip a bus cause the rack is full and wait for the next one.
thanks

I can't speak to SF Bay area, but here in Chicago, I take my Giant Halfway on the bus about once a week. I haven't encountered any problems with it. It does take up some aisle space, but not so much that people can't get around it.

Bag it! Seriously, the bus drivers give you much less grief if you do.

In Denver I always bagged my DaHon folder. Back in the 1980s people were worried about the bike getting their cloths dirty. And to never say what it was back then or some OCP driver would apply the rules (no bikes) and put you off the bus, even if the bike was bagged.

Here's the A-C Transit Rider Info Page on Bicycles. Nothing about folders.

Well, today was the first day I ever caught grief on the bus here in Chi-town. Bus driver was nice, but forceful. She wanted me to unfold it and put it on the rack in the front of the bus. Bus wasn't full, but whatever. I'm not complaining. I also had a 12 pack of beer with me and there was no way I was going to ride the bike with it.
Win some, you lose some. I suppose if it had been bagged there would have been no hassle at all. That said, it's never been an issue in the past so it could have just been that particular driver.

p.s. the 12 pack of beer was a birthday gift from my boss. It was nice... but it left me wondering... how the hell am I going to get a 12 pack of beer home on my bike. LOL

I live in the East Bay and have been wondering about this myself, superpants. I found a written policy that specifically addresses the issue of folding bikes on AC Transit's buses on its website. (It's a .pdf file, so you'll need Adobe Acrobat to open/read it; folding bikes are mentioned on the first page, item 2 onward.)
