Raleigh 20 - which bars?

As you can see in the first picture below, my R20 seat comes up to about the same height as my Downtube IXFS seat, and the bars are at the same height too. Trouble is, the Downtube gives me a nice stretched out riding position, the R20, much more upright. I could put flat bars on the R20, but they'd be lower (the stem is not as high, and they have no rise). Alternately, I could get some original R20 style risers, but they look a bit old lady, or I could stick with the giant cowhorns (see other pic) which look awesome, but have me sat up really straight. I've never been able to remove grips non-destructively, so I'll need to make a very careful choice.....

Put a Downchoob adjustable stem on it, then the world is your oyster. I've got a spare , plus bars and leversif you want it. But will it fit?

I believe it would. I might well be interested. How did you end up with a spare?

I had some downhill MTB bits left over so I graced the Choobe with 'em. I'll put the original bits to one side for ya, gratis.

The Choobe h/post is 28.5 (?) nearly 29mm, the bars are stock 25.4 fitting. The Choob bar is flat as you know,- if it's too low you could try the stem with an MTB riser bar?

Waddevah!

It should be the right height - the head tube is at more or less the same height. You had a downhill MTB tall adjustable stem? Anyway, I believe that the Downtube stem is 1" quill type, and should fit. Interesting possibilities. I could certainly find another home for the cowhorns. The levers won't work though; they're for V brakes, and I'm using dual pivot calipers. Thankyou Snafu, you're very kind!

Thee is a condition though.

You have to show at the next HPFS meet hahha! Snafu didn't mention this clause.

Don't want to puncture any euphoric bubbles here, but the R20 stem is 7/8" while the Downtube one is 1".

Ya. But if the HANDLEPOST diameter on the R20 is around 27-29mm as per the D/T, you're in, unless you want to re-use the wacky R20 H/bar. Although I think it's one of those quill things? Ya just need to end up with a piece of 28mm tube to stick the stem onto.....

V-Brake levers work ok on dual-pivot calipers, btw, and give a weird sort of Son-of Mad Max look to road bikes. . See previous pix of *******ised Hammerhead.

Pardon my French. Apparently ******* is banned.. :-)

It's the quill, where the handlepost enters the headtube, that's the wrong size. Means I can't mount the Downtube handlepost on the bike at all, sadly. If the levers work ok, however, that might be an idea. They're not SUPPOSED to work well (pull too much cable, don't give enough mechananananical advantage), but I've never tried.....

Ah squared. Stem only - no quill-post thing.

I was talking to the Shimano geek at the LBS about V-brake levers on d/pivot calipers before I bought them. Said much the same thing, but suggested there wouldn't be much in it unless I was racin'. And, lo. Thus it came to pass. If anything they feel better than the hopped up brifters that were on there before.

Can ye not lop off the top of the R20 Quill, then shim it out to 28.mm to take a proper grown-up modern stem?

How about a Soma xtra-long quill riser and a butterfly handlebar? It drops right in and allows for upright or stretched out riding. These bars are very comfortable.

Looks good! So that's a quill post with the right diameter for an Aheadset stem? I wonder if I can get one of those over here.....

Isn't that a 21.1mm/0.833" stem? Reason I mention it is, I recently had to hunt down a stem for an old Raleigh Elkhorn and I ended up learning more than I wanted to about it. I was told by an LBS mechanic (of 40 years!!!) that back in the day that size was common on Raleighs, Schwinns, and some BMX bikes.

If so then stuff with that stem size appears occassionally on ebay. Something useful may show up by-and-by.

The shopper was built in the 70s mostly.
So used the 22.2mm 7/8" size

but in the late 80s and 90s they used 21.1mm 3/4" stems in some mtbs.
think they were copying cheap US bikes too much.

Recently reconfigured my 520 with Origin8 Tiki bars. Origin8 has two other interesting bars: the Gary bar which has a deeper drop, some call this a mud-drop bar; and the "Space bar" which is Origin8's version of the traditional Northroad style bar. I like the Tiki. I have moved the brake levers a bit farther towards center to mimick the distance between the hoods on my road set up. The Tiki design has attributes similar to the Nitto moustache styling without becoming too wide, which looks out of place on the Twenty.
The flatness is nice when minor disassembly enables the whole bike to fit in a very small box for air travel.

Ask you On-One dealer about the bars. Origin-8 is going after similar market here in N.A.
