Hi. Some of you may know me as the poster who seems to be perpetually waiting for a folding bike to arrive. I'm still waiting. And checking out bits and bobs that I can add to my future bike. I found this child seat: http://www.ibertinc.com/Theseat/index.htm#Kids
Could anyone comment on whether there is any reason this would not work on a Downtube Mini? It looks like it would, but I am unfamiliar with any balance or weight issues particular to a 16" foldable bike.
Also, my plan is to detach the seat bit, leaving the 'stinger' on the stem and fold. Can anyone familiar with the Mini tell me just from looking at the child seat setup whether this would be OK? It looks like the stinger assembly is intended to remain on the bike even when the seat is removed (for example, in use on another bike).

Perpetually? Really, though, it should be with you by the middle of this week. It takes about ten days because of the US shipping. Did you attempt to order one by some other means before, and run into trouble? Don't worry, I will absolutely ensure that you get it - I had confirmation from Yan that it had shipped.
It looks like that seat should work, though it might take some experimenting to decide how high up the stem you want it. I would imagine as low as possible. On a regular bike, I really wouldn't want the stinger thing left on, as it looks like it would be lethal if you hit something in front of you. On the Mini, you might be able to get it low enough that it's less of an issue.

Yes, perpetually refers to the fact that I have been attempting to acquire a bike for quite a while (or maybe it just feels like a long time). Not to the Mini's shipping time. I figure it will be here some time this week.
It's hard to tell; but I think the seat would fit the Mini. You'll need to loosen the stinger every time you fold the bike, but that shouldn't be a problem. I'm also a little concerned about putting much extra weight at or near the top of the stem; but the stem of the Mini is pretty beefy, so maybe you'll be okay.
I actually own the IBert. I haven't attempted to put it on my folder because I was worried about the rather long steering tube. Also, since the folders are a bit less stable, I'm pretty apprehensive about trying it. If your child falls in the IBert, even with a helmet it wouldn't be great; though I imagine I would make sure I took the injury not her. I've used them on mountain bikes and it's fine, but something about the folder has me worried. Also, the stinger definitely has the potential to do some damage to the nether regions. I've avoided permanent damage, but it's something to think about.
I'd suggest a trailer. I'm currently waiting for one to show up on craigslist. I like the IBert on regular bicycles, but with the longer steering tube I just don't trust it on my downtube 8HN. I will say my daughter loves the IBert, we just haven't gotten out together lately.
Spurdy, thank you. I've only just taken delivery of my Mini and I can see what you mean about "something about the folder" although it may just be my inexperience with the actual bike at this stage. I managed to 'drop' the stem into itself while riding it in the backyard because I didn't realise the quick release needed to be tensioned up real good. Glad there was no iBert nor child on the stem at the time! I'm still figuring out which bits need to stay set in place and which bits have to be loosened for folding. I'm sure all will become clear after a few attempts.
Oh yes, I realised that purdy quick. The bit I have to figure out is how tight is too tight for me to budge, and how loose is too loose to be safe. First I had to figure out where the quick release latch stops, if you see what I mean. If I just push as hard as I can and it's sticking out at a 50 degree angle that's presumably not good. Don't worry, I won't make it fall apart under me in the road
Ok, I said I'd report back and here I am. BLUF, it doesn't work on my Downtube 8HN. I tried above and below the middle QR, and the way the seat sits you can't get the seat forward enough to engage the pin that keeps the seat on the stinger. Depending on how your stem is adjusted it may work for you, but I'd seriously doubt it.
I am pretty dissappointed since I really like the IBert. It's a great seat, but it just doesn't seem to work with the dimensions of the downtubes.
It might be worth asking Yan if he thinks it would be safe to support that much weight on it anyway. But I imagine his answer would be know.
I took some pictures, but I didn't think they were worth putting up. Let me know if you'd like to see them however, and I'll oblige.
Sorry it took so long, sick daughter and pregnant wife. Busy night.
