    Open cup bottom bracket vs sealed?

    Are there any advantages to an open cup bottom bracket? My Vitesse BB needs adjusting and as sammyboy has pointed out to me, the cost of buying the correct tools to maintain it exceeds that of a new shimano sealed BB, so if I'm going to upgrade to a sealed there's no point in spending money on tools for the current open cup BB. Is there any reason to continue using the open cup type?

    Because you CAN service it yourself. If you don't care about that, go for the sealed BB.

    I'm wondering what I'd be servicing, i.e. if play develops isn't it likely to be because the outer shell/cup things have moved/rotated and therefore need readjusting (in which case it's just a pain in the gluteus maximus)? Or is it more complex than that & to do with slight wear/change in the internals, and the corresponding need to maintain the correct pressure on the internals? Is the adjustable nature of an open cup design going to mean it will last longer if regularly serviced?

    If you service a decent cup and cone BB regularly, it'll last almost indefinitely under typical riding conditions. Cartridge BB's are convenient, but who knows what goes on inside there? As soon as there's any wear at all, they need replacing.

    Except for the fact that loose ball would require much more frequent service than the $20 shimano cart which requires NONE. Especially in dirty, commuting weather.

    Sealed cart bb's are superior to loose ball bb's in every imaginable way and application besides racing.

    Unless you are the aged couple who hit the Sunday papers a few years ago after cycling around the world.

    They chose heavy standard bikes, with ball bearing bb's, because they could get them fixed anywhere. They had something like fifteen bottom bracket repairs between them on return, and in many of the places they ended up, bb cartridges by the great god Shimano were simply not available. BB ball bearings were.
