Raliegh 20 broken bolt

Hi folks, Cant say how happy I am to have found this forum. A forum such as this has kept my 85 BMW motorcycle running for 6 years now. I have parked the cycle and have switched over to human powered contraptions such as bikes and kayaks.
I have a Raliegh 20 that I broke off the locking bolt on the hinge. It is snapped off in the body of the downtube. The bolt was rusted in place and I used too much force in trying to remove. Any input is helpful. The stud that remains in the threaded part of the tube is welded in place via corrosion. Rust is so bad here that if you buy a used bike and dont check the seat tube and the head tube you can have a unusable bike due to the fact that the tubes are frozen for life. Thanks in advance

Not a whole ton you can do other than drill it out. That shouldn't be too hard. Just be sure to use a bit that is somewhat smaller in diameter than the screw.

While I haven't attempted this myself, Sheldon Brown says that you can ride the 20 without using the locking bolt. Depending on how you ride, that may be possible.

That being said, I'd drill it out and use a bolt that fits.

Next time, if it doesn't move with medium applied force, WD40 it and let it sit for a while before trying again.

Thanks for your reply. I applied PB Blaster to the bolt every week for 6 months. We have a galvanic condition here,Key West Fl, due to salt air where the metals fuse together. I found this out the hard way when I found a Bianici road bike in the trash. After doing the bearings and general cleaning I tried to move the seat post. No dice. I tried everything except going to the LBS. Gave up and went. What an eye opener. LBS gave me a lesson on galvanic interaction and said that the first thing they check on any bike for trade in is the seat post. They said the only option is to drill out the seat post and hope for the best. Salt air and metal do not mix. So now on all seat post ect I keep a layer of grease between the two metals. Did I do this on the Raleigh bolt? Sorry to say I did not.
Thanks again
John

I lived about half a mile from the seashore when I was a kid. We did have some rusting problems, but my bikes did hold up well, overall. I didn't do the maintenance then, so I can't tell you what was done. Also, the intervening buildings between the sea and my house took care of the spray. I do remember that the houses on the sea-face had problems.

All the best with the drilling out of the bolt. If you're careful, it should work. It may take some time to clean out the threads, though.
