Eurobike, new Dahons and other folders

hunting after the CarryMe, I am also looking forward to see some new Dahon folders at the Eurobike tomorrow:
1. Dahon Mu Uno: one gear, backpedal break:

Ah, sorry for double posts. Since a while there had been rumours that Sturmey Archer will produce a wider range 3 Spd hub extra for the brommi. Seems that on Eurobike one can get information on that (here a quote from Velovision):

"Brompton's wide six speed
A new wide-range three-speed hub from Sturmey Archer, combined with their two-speed 'derailleur' system, gives Brompton owners an extended gearing range - I'll have to nip back to confirm the exact numbers, but I gathered it was around the same as a wide-range cassette, or that of an 8 or 9-speed hub gear. It seems the hub is made especially for them by Sturmey. Didn't get any useful pics yet..."

Shame the Uno still has all the cable routing intact - a minimal singlespeed should have a nice smoothed out frame if you ask me. And a more agressive stem angle for an urban bike.

The folding bars look pretty neat though. Lucky you to be at the show. Hope to see more pix!

I've not been paying attention, I didn't realise there was such a difference in handlepost/stem angle on different models.

I was thinking just the opposite - no right answer, just different choices! With the brake bosses and cable guides intact, it's a great, inexpensive platform for spec'ing out a personal vision.

Two observations on the Mu Ex:

1. It has a chain stay (pointed out by someone else in another thread?); I wonder why? Frame too whippy?

2. The rear derailer seems very far off the ground; is that a feature of the Red RD?

They've reconfigured the rear end on this tight little folding frame to add the front mech.

I am back from the Eurobike. For now just a short note as I ll be leaving for work in a minute. I was a cool adventure, I met lots of lovely bike-business people and only one rather rude example.
I managed to buy the Carryme (standard). They charged me only 270,- Euro including racks and bags. Tom from Pacific Cylcles was very helpful and supernice :thumb:
I also had the chance to talk eg. to Michael Lin (Son of Lin senior and second head of the company), to Mark Sanders, Bernhard Rohloff and Florian Schlumpf.
8 hours was much too short, 2 days would have been better. I did not manage to visit the exhibition stands of Dahon, ming cycles, Airnimal or Pacy.
I will be back with some pics later.

Now that is really good news for the Brompton owner that is considering a new one in the future. I always like both the UK and Far East made Sturmey Archer Hubs. This is a real step foward for Brompton. I like the way the company is innovating it's product without sacrificing and still retaining the basic design of the bike.

I was paying attention. The current line of Dahons don't have that difference in handlepost angle.

Yeah, good news. When I asked at the SA stand for info on this hub, the guy told me to go to the Brompton stand. The hub was not shown at the SA stand. SA made this hub especially for B. The SA guy told me the that B. did some of the research for the hub together with SA and also B. paid for some of the development/tools. After some time SA may also deliver that hub to other bike manufacturers like Dahon but not now.

B. is actually not only considering it for the future but showed this hub on a demonstrator bike. The hub together with the 2Spd dérailleur has ~ 305% gear range. So that's really in the area of the current 8Spds and as a plus the 3Spd+2cogs is much lighter than an 8Spd. I must say I can see how this approach is in line with b. general aim to keep it light. Mr. Lohse the mechanic from Voss (distribution Brompton Germany) told me, the new 6Spd will probably come in spring. Later it will be possible to buy it as an upgrade.

Also new: colours will all be in matt glaze. I was impressed how elegant, say the matt black bike together with ti-elements looks. After looking at so many bikes, I like to say that in comparison - perhaps with the only exception of cockpit parts (brake levers and shifters) the brompton bike oozes out quality which was not so often to find on other stands.

Sturmey has a long history of doing specials that are exclusive to a certain customer. But without a secondary two speed device, this super wide Sturmey three speed wouldn't be very useful and I'm not sure who else would want it.

+2nd shifter/cable

Perhaps for Brompton, who because of their fold has to have the weight of a chain tensioner anyway. Still, looking at Sturmey's published weights, I doubt it's "much lighter" when weighed anywhere outside the marketing department.

yes, probably this combination is only interesting for brompton owners. I was not precise in saying "much lighter". And given the weights from the website on current 3Spd-hubs and the ~ 160 grams for extra cable and shifter, I estimate that 2x3-hub combination will be about 200-250 grams lighter compared to a brommi with XRF8 modification? Would that be in line?

• Tubus plans to produce high quality steeltube racks for folders.

  In the moment they are doing intensive research on it. They will be ordering some more folders to look more into it. They plan to build the side tubes of the racks in a way that it will be possible to have panniers nearer to the ground, without having the panniers interfering with dérailleurs and stuff. Roller wheels shall be attachable. Named timetable is: we will see such racks at Eurobike next year.

• The new light Rohloff still needs time. The Company is just too busy to deliver the actual demands of the current speedhub (Mr. Rohloff says with a smile:"Tell BikeForums Mr. Rohloff says nothing accurate can be said but probably not within the next two years...but then again one needs stimulus"

Any more news about full-sized folders ? .... was the Pacific IF Mode as good in the flesh as in the videos and pictures ? Did they have the IF Cross on the booth.
