any1 know what pump will work on my japanese folding bike? if u dont know what it looks like...u can see it on this thread:

the owner even gave me a small pump..but it won't "grip" the tube...then we have to borrow one of those regular pump from his friend which has 2 holes...one hole is a little bigger than the other. i went to my lbs to buy a pump today and the owner assures me the small pump would work...as soon as we try it it didn't work and we also try his regular pump which has only 1 hole...but still didn't work.

so my question is does any1 out there know if there is a universal pump out there would definately work with my bike? preferably a small pump so i can carry with me...if not a regular pump would be fine too.

hi,

their valve system is neither Presta or Schrader. try this way: use a presta valve adapter and screw on the valve. use the larger hole on the pump (scharder) and fix to the valve adapter and start pumping. I hope this works for you. PS, DO NOT unscrew the metal cap on the valve because it holds the valve system together

can you give me a link to what a presta valve adaptor look like since i'm a noob to the world of bike? does any lbs sell that? yes we learn it the hard way...as soon as we unscrew the metal cap...all the air rush out.

all bike shops carries the adapter. If the adapter method doesn't work you can change the tube to a Schrader valve type and that way you can keep the pump you just brought.

thx for the info..when you said change the tube to the schrader valve..does that mean i have to change new tires also? and how much would changing to shrader valve would cost?

you don't need to change the the tire itself unless its worn out. the tube and tire are two different things. I assuming you are in NYC so any Target or WM has schrader tubes because they carry BMX bikes. I think they cost between 3 to 5 bucks each. here's video on how do change a bike tire.

Your rim will have a hole in it, which will either be suitable for Presta (smaller) or Schraeder (larger) valves. If your current valve is neither, it's probably a Dunlop/Woods, and therefore the hole is Schraeder sized. You can put a Presta valve through a Schraeder hole, but you need an adaptor (next to nothing from the bike shop). Tubes are, as mentioned above, cheap.

when i went to pick up my presta valve adaptor, i found and boughtthe pump that i was talking about and able to pump up my bike tires...it has 2 holes, a gauge, and when you slide out one of the handle, it has a hidden needle to pump balls, and a tiny cone like tube. what is this tiny cone like tube use for....pumping what?

It's for things like paddling pools and air mattresses - where you would normally use your mouth. They don't work too well.
