First Bike-Dahon Speed D7
 

I never had a real bike or folding bike before other than a 4-wheeler when I was like 8 years old. I realized that I need a bike to commute short distances around my area so I ordered Dahon Speed D7. Was this a good choice?

Dahon makes pretty solid bikes. So, in that sense, it's a good choice.

Now... is it the bike that fits your actual needs? Well, that's another discussion entirely. ;)

I think you made the perfect choice. It rides well and is comfortable enough for any short to medium distance trip. Folds up quickly and easily too.

I bought one last year and have put 3500 miles on it so far. The main folding latch has a tendency to self-loosen , so check it every 1-200 miles.

I started off with a Speed D7, but 'traded it in' on the aluminum framed Vitesse. Componentry is virtually identical. Solid bike for the money. Use it a few times a week, and like it very much.

Good choice? Yes, it is a good balance in price, performance and quality. Your troubles though have just begun because that D7 will get you hooked and soon you'll be craving for the harder stuff. Before you know it you'll become a folder junky - acquiring ever more enticing models.

I think you did a very good choice. This model is a nice steel frame one with all the commuter accessories (fenders and a rear rack) to start out with. All you have to add is a nice front and rear light (I use battery powered ones) and you will be set.

I have been having lots of fun on my Speed 7: Around the local bike trails; in the van when I migrate; on the boat when cruising. It's fun to ride. Can't remember saying that about past bikes.

I'm 6' and 230# and it seems to fit will. For me it's an entry-level Proof of Concept tool. I found that folders work well with my lifestyle and I'm already hunting for a folding mountain bike for next season.

I just gave it a first ride and very pleased with it. However it takes a great amount of force and time to fold it and it's very cumbersome. I don't think I will unfold it ever again because it's just too hard. Also, I don't know about other bikes but it's very hard to go up the hills with my Dahon Speed D7 but its probably because I never rode a bike before.

Sounds like the hinge is tight. Try to lube it from underneath with some very thin oil (like WD40 mixed with regular oil) and flex it to and fro the get the oil in.

Hard to fold is not normal. Something out of adjustment. I have had no troubles in that area. Just unlatch and fold.

Now, getting up hills - the Speed 7 has seven gears and we have some 10% grades that I just push it up when I slow to a crawl in the lowest gear. I was told that folders, with long stems, do not like to be pedaled standing up. Others, more expert, can comment on this. If I can't do it sitting I get out and walk.

There is another model with 21 or so gears. $$$$

The D7 was highly rated by Consumer Reports a few years back.

I've had this bike for about a week now and I have to say it's one of the best purchases I ever made. It's so easy to maneuver and I find it fairly comfortable when riding long distances.

Having fun with it? My D7 is a fun ride. It must fit right. Those other bikes... perhaps poor fit.

One topic to research - can the granny gear be made into a great granny gear for those hills?

I realized it takes a little practice to be good at climbing hills. It becomes easier as I ride more and my legs are getting stronger.
