I must have missed something here.

It was something about getting harrassed by some guys in a van, then a police officer asked the cyclist if they had given him enough space (they had), and then the police officer stopped the van and cited them for several things like dangerous driving, illegally honking, and then a DUI test .. but maybe it wasn't true since the edit knocked out the post?

I've seen the occasional driver I'd like to see worked over in that way. To be honest, not that many though.

OK, I'll re-post it:

I was minding my own business riding my bike on the side of the road this morning when a van load full of punks drove by fast and honked the horn, and one of them stuck its head out the window and yelled something at me. I didn't hear what it said, but I doubt if it was nice. Then a police car suddenly materialized - I don't know if he was hiding someplace or following them - and he lit them up and pulled them over. When I went over, the friendly cop told me he saw them yell at me and he asked if they drove too close to me (they didn't). He said he was charging them with illegal use of a horn, aggressive driving, and a lot of other stuff that he a hadn't quite figured out yet. He said he was gonna throw the book at them - and that was before they were even tested for DUI. Last I saw was backup police cars arriving on the scene. Excellent!

I don't know if all those charges were coming from just yelling at little ol' moi, or if they had been following them and seen them do other stuff before.

Outstanding. I'd like to buy that man a beer.

Police work at its finest! Young, fit-looking cop. Wouldn't be surprised if he was a cyclist himself.

^ Yeah, we discussed something similar a little while back in the London Aggression Idiocy thread. Until a person has experienced being on the receiving end of cyclist-bashing, that person might be inclined to think that those cops may have been too heavy on the van punks. I can't think of a better and just way to discourage that type of behavior.

Maybe that cop had experienced cyclist-bashing too... or the van is known to them for other reported incidents. Nevertheless, I'd like to buy him a beer too! :)

Yeah, this was nothing on the scale of punks in vehicles harassing people on bikes or otherwise, but it's great that the cops took it so seriously. There have been plenty of cases of bicyclists, and runners, and pedestrians, being deliberately murdered by people in motor vehicles, sometimes just for laughs. I read about a girl on a bicycle in London last year - her purse was snatched by punks on a motorcycle - and in the process she fell from her bike and suffered critical brain damage. Perhaps you've heard a follow up on that horror.

almost everytime i ride my bike in city streets some punk always in SUVs btw either get too close on purpose, yell, throw something at you, give you looks... any city i ride my bike and im the most careful rider not fast and almost riding the curb edge.

i just can't wait for gasoline to go up to $5.00~$8.00 a Gallon. this will surely rid the streets of SUVs

But then the punks will only be driving somewhat smaller vehicles - they can still present a serious danger to a cyclist without being in a two and half ton truck. Any car will do if the driver is a bully with a dislike of people on two wheels.

Cyclist robbed for fanny pack


TUCSON, AZ - On New Years eve a 32-year-old bicyclist was robbed at gunpoint while he was riding his bike on East Speedway Boulevard. Undoubtable looking for more, all the robber got away with was his fanny pack and empty wallet.

On December 31, Nathan Burdick says he was doing what he does every morning before sunup. He was riding his bicycle 18 miles to work. Suddenly, he says, a motorist started making suspicious u-turns around him.

Burdick says, "I'm thinking maybe [it's] someone wanting to have some fun running a cyclist off the road."

Instead the motorist pulled up alongside Burdick and pulled a gun.

Burdick says, "When the gun was out the window, oh yah the adrenalin starts to kick in. And I start to get worried."

The robber didn't take Burdick's bike, rather his fanny pack with valuable cycling equipment and wallet.

Burdick says the robber must have been surprised to discover, "I had no money in my wallet. Cash fuels their fire if they're trying to rob you. And if they get nothing, I guess I win."

When sheriff's deputies caught the robber minutes later they arrested him for robbery and for shooting his roommate hours earlier.

Burdick says learning that makes him feel, "very lucky and very fortunate that I didn't get shot in the process."

Investigators say the suspect Ramon Velez admitted he was on drugs. He remains in the Pima County Jail on multiple charges.
