I just can't stop upgrading the little Ignio folder - Pics

Rode this thing today and the brakes were driving me nuts. So I went to the bike shop and got some Shimano Deore V Brakes and installed them. Much better.

All right. I was going to quit but I think I'll turn this thing into an 8 speed.

Looks great !
Is it comparable to Dahon in riding? Worse? Better?

EvilV 01-09-09 09:44 AM

That bike looks brand new. Either you don't ride it much or you have a cleaning and maintenance schedule that puts mine to shame.

I wish I could fit those brakes onto my Merc. After riding the disk braked Strida knockoff for a week or two, I took out the Merc for a spin down to the river side bike path today which involves some pretty steep hills to get there, and I was horrified by the atrocious lack of deceleration when I yanked those levers. I need to sort them out.

trueno92 01-09-09 10:17 AM

hahah this is awesome! wait until you have changed over every component..

then you go buy a road bike or fixie, and start all over again!

dschwarz 01-09-09 10:22 AM

Can you still call the bike an "Ignio" when you have replaced every single component except the frame? :-)

Of course he can! Look at all the "chopped and dropped" R20`s that is presented. No discussion about name then :thumb:

John, I cannot believe you have replaced the brakes without replacing the brake levers! :notamused:

TrekJapan 01-09-09 05:03 PM

I'll get to the brake levers. All they had was stuff in the LBS that cost too much yesterday.

Not to mention the gear shifter, derailer and crankset. And lose the dork disc and derailer protector. :D

bykerouac 01-09-09 06:37 PM

Looks great! Though it can stand to have a spiffy crankset, as jur mentioned. A Mary handlebar would look great there too. I wish the Brompton can have V brakes........

TrekJapan 01-09-09 06:42 PM

I agree with you about the dorky chain guard but my kid rides this bike and the thought of buying new pants constantly ruined due to chain grease doesn't appeal not much to me.

joseff 01-09-09 07:19 PM

I think jur was referring to the pie plate, not the chain guard. Well, at least the derailleur guard is gone!

Why, so it is! I missed that.

That won't be possible. You can't buy 8sp screw-on freewheel. (Well it will be possible but you'll need to replace the whole back wheel, or buy a hub and spokes and build it onto the rim.)

Hang on though, do you have a spare wheel from a Dahon upgrade?

LesMcLuffAlot 01-09-09 08:43 PM

Trim those brake cables or tuck them behind the brake. Attention to detail shows her you love her.

LesMcLuffAlot 01-09-09 08:51 PM

Put the blue part of that tire logo centered overtop of the tube valve stems. You made a good start mounting the tires so the logo's are on the drive side, now just finish the job. Show her you love her. It's the little things.

Pocko 01-09-09 10:03 PM

I wonder what the bike would look like "de-chromed," seeing as you went for black Deore brakes? What about black spokes and spray paint the non-rubbing part of the rims black?? :D

You didn't seriously think that we would help you control this "mad-modd-disease" did you? The whole lot of us were infected years ago!

bykerouac 01-09-09 10:08 PM

Lose the wheel reflectors...

Barends would make a nice upgrade too. :)

And new wheel set of course. It is clear by the pictures the bicycle is bagging from the moment of purchase for 24 or 28 spoked wheels and double wall rims ! :D

Look at these cute components

Together with these rims

In case of difficulty assembling a new wheel, a couple of minutes on Skype and you're done!

joseff 01-10-09 10:07 AM

You guys won't stop until he has a carbon seatpost and Super Record components on the Ignio, eh?

mrbrown 01-10-09 01:31 PM

I think the fork could be carbon too!

Hey John, I hear that Okinawa is a wonderful little island! Now that you've got your brakes sorted out, why not take a pic or two of your Ignio at your fav cycling route? This may not be the right thread for it, but I wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of Okinawa from your "bike's eye view"... :)
