    Increased interest in folding bikes

According to this graph, the public interest in folding bikes went significantly up in 2008.

Also, there is a clear northern hemisphere seasonal pattern (sorry Jur ;-)).

Yeah, I definitely see more people pootling about on foldies on campus--used to be just me, then I brought my friend over to the dark side. Now there are at least 4 or 5 of us on campus with foldies, both new and vintage.

When I rode on the Chicago Lake shore Bike Path two weeks ago, I saw at least 10 foldies, ranging from Birdy(1), Dahon(3), DT(mine and my nephew's), BF(1) and some unknown brands. So, yes, people are getting smarter.

"Folding bicycle" seems pretty consistent: http://www.google.com/trends?q=foldi...ate=all&sort=0

    As does "folding bike" http://www.google.com/trends?q=foldi...ate=all&sort=0

Sales and interest were almost certainly up for most of 2008; the whole industry was doing very well until Q4 2008; the bike market crashed, in close correlation to falling gas prices and the larger problems with the economy.

I just don't think Google Trends or anecdotal evidence are particularly accurate market research tools.

I think of these charts as a rough indicator of how the folding bike is doing. I tend to visit official commercial bike Websites like Bike Biz and the like for more accurate figures.
