I have a DT IX FS and have always been pleased with the Sun Race shifter and derailleur - solid reliable shifts even in the worst of conditions, although a bit agricultural. I particularly liked the red ring that could be rotated on the shifter to give more or less positive clicks between gears.

However, I now have the ring set to the most positive setting and there is barely a click, resulting in me sometimes over shifting to the next gear (either up or down).

I've had the bike for about 10 months and racked up about 1300 miles, so there's been plenty of shifting on my hilly route to work.

Has anyone else experienced this and know of a fix before I take it apart?

I'm sure an upgrade will be suggested, but I'm reluctant to go this route because (for me at least) the standard set up works well. I have had hi-grade mtb's with top notch shimano componentry and so do appreciate the benefits an upgrade would present.

Am I right in thinking a shimano grip shift is not compatible with the sun race mech due to different spacing? I think I'll be lucky to find much bar shimano at my lbs and so would need to replace the mech too.

As far as I can tell, the sunrace shifters are Shimano compatible. Careful with SRAM, though, as some of their stuff (labeled ESP???) is not.

Thanks for the tip - I think you're quite right, I found this;

SunRace stuff is "plug & play" compatible with Shimano components, as is (obviously) the 1:2 ratio SRAM stuff (Rocket and Attack shifters, SRT and MRX shifters).

However, the basic functionality of the stock item is still intact - anyone have any ideas on how I can effect a repair?

I don't know if this is allowed on these forums, but it's worth a shot.

I've still got the original twistshift rear derailluer pair that came with my swift, that I've been meaning to sell. PM me if you are interested / have questions.

If this kind selling thing isn't appropriate on the forums, my apologies & I promise not to do it again. In fact, I proabably won't do it again in any case.

Have you done a cable/housing replacement? My new 8FS was stuck and I just performed this upgrade. Much better now.

The cables and outers have been kept well lubed with teflon spray.

The shifting is smooth and without resistance - my problem is that the "clicks" on the gripshift between gears are becoming progressively less "clicky", meaning I sometimes over shift.

What I really want to know is if anyone else has had this problem and how they resolved it - preferably without replacing the shifter, but if they did, what shifter was used as a replacement.
