List the contents of yer foldie traveling kit
I realize close trips don't really require anything but I seldom leave on any bike without:
2 tire levers
small manual air pump
Rain cover for rack bag
Extra battery for rear flasher
Spare brake cable
Spare shifter cable
15mm box wrench (on bikes I need one)
Yes it requires a pretty good size bag to carry all this junk. Yes it adds weight and no I'd rather have it and the weight than to be without.
I used to not carry cables but I tossed a Dual Drive cable on my Speed TR once. Having a cable on the bike would have been a 10 minute fix. Instead it was a blown ride. Stuff like cables goes in those goofy pockets you'd never use anyway and it doesn't weigh much.
So am I nuts to carry all this or just a Sierra Hotel biker?
I rarely carry much more than a cell phone, lock, a hand towel (I sweat), my Ikea bag, and work clothes if I'm commuting. All in a bag that ties to the rack. But then, I'm never far from a bus stop. If I have a problem with my bike so that it can't be ridden, I can fold it, bag it, and get on a bus. I get the impression that you don't have that option, so I understand you wanting to have a good repair kit with you at all times.
I carry a multitool, ulock, bungee cords, pump, and patch kit, basically. The rest of the stuff--digicam, cellphone, spare batteries, wallet, keys, bag raincover, netbook--I carry all the time, anyway, so that doesn't really count.
On the week day commutes, I carry a full set of clothes, occasionally stuff a pair of shoes, netbook, wallet, ipod, keys, coffee, cellphone, and water on the bottle-cage of the bike.
On weekend rides, or even lunch, all I carry is my cellphone & ID's.
All my tools, spares I just keep at home.
Into my second year of commuting, I've had two flats, both on my way home. First time it was a slow leak that held up till a block or so from home. The second, I wasn't even half way there. I just fold'd, waved a cab down, and got a ride the rest of the way.
I've been carrying a fair bit of junk around Spain lately. The pictures will give the idea.
Nokia N95 8GB which is my phone, GPS and Camera
Spare CR123 for my helmet light, a Fenix P2D
Pack of wet tissues for cleaning up
A spare t-shirt to change into when I get to work
When it is rainy season, a rain jacket
Like JCFlack, I don't usually pack the repair stuff because Singapore has a very accessible public transport system so I am rarely far away from a bus stop, subway or cab if I happen to get a flat or if it rains.
Any closeups of your mounting points for all that lot?
I use "Eneloop" AA's from Sanyo, & they last ages between use, so no longer carry spare AA's.
Cables would be a good idea though........
BTW, I'll try your "safety" check approach on my great niece when I see her soon, & ask to "check" her bike ;-)
2 tire levers
(sometimes) spare tire
small cone (15/16mm) wrench
2 turntables and a microphone
Or do you rely on them being there when you get to your gig?
