Dahon recall
 

Got today a mail from Performance Inc saying that Dahon is recalling several models. The problem is in the handlepost hinges. Seems similar to the REI Novara recall that was posted a week or two ago.

The models listed in the mail are Glide P8, Curve D3, Speed D7, Mariner D7, MU SL, MU P24, CIAO P8, Vitesse HG-7, MU XL Sport and Espresso.

Dahons are probably the worst bikes out there.
I am not surprised at the recall.
Too bad our store sells them and now we have to deal with this mess.

Such a dumbass comment lol! Shows how clueless you are. Even the German car manufacturer Mercedes has the odd product recall. Dahon make loads of bikes and mostly good ones at that.

I checked dahon.com, and what I get is something like:
If your bike has a serial number starting with D... stamped on the bottom bracket shell, your bike is an international model and not affected by the recall.

Ooookay... that either means
"Your production batch is separate from the recalled ones, no worries", or
"Outside North America? You have no hope of suing us. Bwahahahaha!!!!"

I have just bought a dahon curve 08. what do I need to check? get replaced

There's a bike chain in the UK that has something like 150 (2007/8 - I think) D7s at a quite reasonable price. I was interested in one from their local chain, and they said all their 20 or so D7s are affected. So, I guess the notion that international versions are unaffected isn;t accurate. Though I suppose you'd have to determine what an international version actually is. I imagine it's quite easy for any chain to buy a bulk order of D7s from anywhere and stock them.

From what I can tell, Dahon makes around 500,000 bikes a year; around 12,000 bikes are listed in the recall. Fortunately it sounds like no one has gotten seriously injured as a result of the flaw.

I think it's very good to get the word out, but don't see this as a significant reason to slam Dahon. These kinds of things happen with almost any manufacturer.

To be fair, all makers of tangible consumer products have the risk of defects creeping up on their products from time to time. It is up to the new or recent owner to observe their new products and check the company's official Websites from time to time to spot and correct these problems. I have 2 Dahons at present. They each had a major part failure around the time of purchase. I took the bikes back and the problems were dealt with. End of initial purchase problems. Any other problems and issues I had with these bikes are now due to normal aging and wear.

Funny. Mine starts with a D serial number and mine is on the list for recall. How unfortunate!

Does anyone have the details of what's wrong with the handlepost? As far as I am concerned, the bike is fine and nothing's wrong with it - but perhaps that's the problem - I don't know what's wrong with it!

The hinge is more likely to crack and possibly fail. Just get it replaced.

I'm just waiting for that guy who used to come here and write screeds of moaning about Chinese manufacturers and quality creep to hear of this and rise up again in glee to winge on about the evils of far east manufactuing. (Shudder).

The "D" does not apply to bikes sold in the US and maybe Canada. If you have a bike with a serial number starting with "D" and was purchased out of the US and Canada, then you are not covered. All the 2008 Dahons I purchased in the US had serial numbers starting with a "D".

I bought my Curve D3 in the US and it has a D at the start of the serial number. But what they are saying is ambiguous. If it's international with a D don't worry but US worry?

Also, I went to check the hinge for the R and discovered that I cannot fold the handlepost down. I haven't folded the bike in quite some time, and I would think it might be stiff, but I cannot budge it. Could the hinge be bent and preventing it from moving? I don't see any cracks. Anybody know where it would crack?

So my question is this, how many of you guys would really not ride one of these bikes for safety reasons? Is it really something to worry about?

My bike was mail order and there is not a Dahon dealer around here that I know of, so how would I get it fixed?

Do we know for a fact that Dahons are not manufactured in the far east?

Bummer. this is my commuter, since I have to take a train for part of my journey. The US site seems to indicate that ALL of the bikes are being recalled, if I read it correctly.

I ride in some pretty hardcore urban traffic, so I suppose I should not mess around and push it..

and I definitely have zero idea where the receipt is.

If you live by an REI store, they'll replace the hinge for free even if you didn't buy it from them.

ThorUSA.web site has a tech bulletin re:recall.Go there and you will see very easily whether you need new stem and hinge or not.Shows pics who needs who doesnt.

things must have changed since some of the posts on here, as the thor usa bulletin pdf says to check the serial, but the Dahon site basically directs only non USA/Canada customers to input their serial number.

My LBS said that they'll take it in and address the issue.

Nobody likes defects, but it would be worse if there were a known defect & Dahon didn't issue a recall.
Recalls are expensive!
