Folding bikes under $100?

Do these exist?
I want a folding bike to ride on the beach and don't have much cash to shell out. I'm not too concerned about quality as long as it doesn't fall apart the second I get on it. I highly doubt I'll ever use this bike again other than for this trip.

I already tried ebay and craigslist with no luck. I'm ruling out thrift stores since I can't even find a decent normal bike there.

I need one fast, I only have a week and a half to make this happen. Any info would be helpful, thanks!!

hit up your local Clist and drop into a bike shop that has folders is my only suggestion.

I think the cheapest "new" folders in the U.S. may be at Camping World (www.campingworld.com). They use some Dahon technology and are currently ~$150 plus tax plus $12 for membership.

Too bad you don't live in Japan. They sell cheap folders at all the hardware / DIY stores for about $120 or $130. That's about as cheap as I've ever seen. Usually 3 to 6 speed with crappy brakes and rims and tires.

I bought a $150 bike and put a flat bar, Shimano brakes, marathon racer tires, a rack and a Thudbuster on it and gave it to my kid.

I keep saying this but I have the stuff to make it an 8 speed but I never get around to it.

You could also check on eBay. The black folder you see as my avatar is about $109.99 plus shipping. It has turned out to be a good bike after 13 months, and 4,000 plus miles, and going strong! :thumb: It is being offered on eBay at the present, but you say you have only a week? It took about that long for me to get mine.

Good luck to you. I hope you find what you're looking for!

"On the beach"??? Assuming you mean "at the beach".

What beach?

Here in Ventura, CA (1/2 way between Malibu and Santa Barbara) folders are rare. Everyone rides a CRUISER. In six months I have seen only five other folders: 1 - Dahon, 2 - Downtubes (FS) and 2 - Bike Fridays, besides ours.

You might want to find someone there who would lend you a cruiser.

Thanks for all the feedback, it was really helpful!!

Lou- No, I mean on the actual beach. I'm going to St. Augustine, Fl and I remember the last time I was there seeing lots of people riding their bikes on the beach (not sure if these were cruisers or not) and I wanted to kick myself for not bringing my own. The sand at St. Augustine is packed really tightly since cars are allowed to drive up and down the beach, I remember it felt like walking on concrete.
There's no way the people I'm going with would be cool with me lugging my giant bike with me so that's why I'm opting for a smaller folder.

I'm bidding on a Dahon Boardwalk s1 on ebay right now with hopes of closing in on this one around $180ppd. We'll see what happens. I've come to the conclusion that finding a folder under $100ppd given the time frame is a pipe dream.

Also, I'm more partial to a Dahon because I feel like I could sell it when I return from my trip and get back what I paid for easier than any other brand. They seem pretty popular on ebay.
