Dahon Mu P8 seatpost and handlepost clamp lubed

The levers for seatpost and handpost clamp, and for the telescopic handlepost clamp on my Mu P8 have become very stiff and squeal when closing the clamp. After seeing a post on the Dahon forums, I decided to apply a drop of oil to the clamp screw threads and to the surface of the cams and presto, it's much easier to fold/unfold my bike.
I'm curious as to why those parts of the bike weren't lubed in the first place when new. Is lubing those parts of my bike a bad idea?

TIA
