Special tool for removing Capreo cassette?

I did a self-supported tour on my Birdy this weekend. It was really great, and I suppose I ought to post some picture in the pootle thread.. :thumb:

Anyway, I broke a spoke on the back wheel. I managed to true it enough to get to a town with a bike shop. Initially the mechanic thought the spoke was from the drive side, and started futzing around with the cassette - only to realize he didn't have any tools that could remove it. Luckily the spoke was non-drive side (I don't know if I trust a mechanic that didn't see that straight off!) - but it still leaves the issue:

Question: Should I purchase and carry with me a Capreo cassette removal tool? Is it strictly necessary, or was this mechanic just not very knowledgeable?

There is a special tool for the cassette. Just mentally picturing the differences between the tools -- Capreo cassette removal tool and standard Shimano cassette removal tool -- I don't think that they could possibly be compatible. Perhaps there is a work around. But I don't know it.

Yes, the Capreo has a special cassette lock-ring removal tool.

I have one at home, but it never occurred to me that I should take it with me. I'm doing a multi-day tour of the Oregon coast next month. Probably should throw the tool into the saddlebag....

Where did you get it? A Google search only shows two shops carrying the tool - and both are in the UK.

thanks!

I found it at Harris Cyclery. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/tools...te.html#capreo

Looks like they're out of stock....

If you need one, you're welcome to borrow mine.

Does this mean that the Smooth Hound is the pick of the stable for this run? or are there other Capreo clad conveyances cluttering the courtyard ?

Yup, going to take the modified SmoothHound for this epic journey. :thumb: I'm really looking forward to it.

I got mine from a local shop that ordered it directly from Shimano. From what I recall, it did not take long; i.e., more than say two weeks.

No, not going to visit the folding bike factory in Oregon. Just riding down the coast. Family in the VW campervan as SAG. :thumb:
