dahon cracks!! yes, it's happened

this is true.
a friend showed me his curve (he said it was 2008)
consulted me about his rather wobbly handlepost.
upon closer inspection:
yes, the hinge, the rear anchor, cracks!!!
I am not sure whether the bike was mishandled or not.
but nevertheless I advised him to check, if the bike was among the ones dahon recalled.
I haven't heard from him yet.
If, it is among the recalled, is this the answer to our bepuzzled minds after all these days, about the recalled handlepost?
metalurgical failure (in certain batch)?

I still don't get a satisfying answer. let alone an 'official', 'satisfying', 'truthful', 'transparent', answer from dahon.
(I guess I am too demanding, like my mother)

meanwhile, I (with many other friends, here) am still waiting for the replacement handlepost for my 2008 vitesse.

What answer do you like to get ?

Obviously it is a recall bike, where the handlepost should be replace under warranty. Did your friend bring the bike to a shop and have them initiate the recall ?

I havent seen any broken handlepost yet , but im sure Dahon has , they certainly would not replace 100 thousands of handleposts if there is no problem with them. I was told that they had seen 4 or 5 and one person had an accident and a couple bruises and roadrash . .>WHich is the reason for the recall....

I have most of my customers taken care off, a few handleposts which were send to different dealers around the world have not shown up yet ..... ( In one case I had to find out that the shop used the handlepost for a differnet bike than that of my customer ...yikes .... but another one is on its way )

I dont have a new one on my own bike yet ...lol But the sub-manufactuer is real busy turning the new improved versions out, without rushing it and sending one out without throughout inspection... That would be even worse, because all of the sudden the recall would produce even more problems than the original few ...

this is definitely part of the recall handle post. how long had you been waiting for your handle post. email thor and he will surely help you. or better yet just call REI and they can schedule a fix in a hurry.

thanks,
vic

<flame off>

Thor, do you know how Dahon allocate the limited supply of new hinges between (a) new bikes they ship to the stores, (b) new bikes that already in the stores and (c) post sale bikes?

If they still ship new bikes with fixed hinges and if the pre sale bikes in the stores all have fixed hinges then it may be just a matter of prioritization (short term revenue vs. customer base satisfaction).

I do know that customers ( existing bikes) have absolutely priority .... only if they have handleposts left over , than the dealers can expect to get a few extra ones to upgrade the bikes they have in stock prior to sale....

Now keep in mind that Dahon has about 6 different handlebars .... Silver Black VRO adjustable, short long and so forth .. so it happens that everybody is waiting for a handlebar for a speed TT while A speed tr is available .... and so forth ....

Thats how it rolls here in the states, but I am sure about the same in other countries...

Its painfull to tell a potential customer he has to wait for a bike ( as I and all other Dealers) wont sell a bike which is not fixed , and than loose a sale .... because the handlepost is not there , or you just repaired a couple bikes for free.... wit the same post you now need to ship the bike out....

itrs a huge pain in the butt, but we will all get through this and eventually i will have one extra to fix my own bike as well...lol
