That's as big as the wheel! The rider must have thews of steel to push that gear.

ummm how many gear inches can he get? I guess a 2 degree incline would be a challenge with that setup :)

That's a bit crazy and i'm not even sure where in the world did he get that chainring!

Oh yeah and from that thread is seems like those guys really like souping up those vintage dahon stoaway's very nice stuff they did to it.

you're right about that. i didn't even notice that it is as big as the wheel. a 16" chainring.

According to here, a 48T chainring is 199 millimeters in diameter, giving a ratio of about .241 teeth per millimeter.

Let us presume that this is a 305 wheel. Including the tire, let's say that the wheel is 350mm in diameter. This comes to 84T.

I don't know what that back sprocket is. Let's say 11T. This gives us 102 gear inches. Crazy high but not totally insane. Were it something more reasonable like 14T, we'd have a perfectly reasonable 81 gear inches.

It is refreshing to see an out of the box thinking.

Seems to me more as a creative expression than an attempt to have high GI since the rear cog is not the smallest possible.

It's always more efficient to change gear by increasing teeth.

So use a larger chainring for a larger gear and a larger rear sprocket for a smaller gear.
