    Where to buy 16" Schwalbe Marathon Plus in USA? other recommendations?

    Im thinking of changing the tires that came with my Ori Mi8 to the Marathon Plus Schwalbes. I have been searching online but it seems that the dealers I found are located in Europe and the shipping charges are not attractive...

    Im looking for an excellent rolling and puncture resistant 16" tire, any other recommendations that are easier to get in the USA are welcome... thanks in advance!

    I usually buy mine direct from Schwalbe North America. They ship quickly and I don't have to worry if it is in stock or not. Big Apples are supposed to be a good tire too. I run the regular Marathons on Raleigh 20, but I have heard that the Marthon Supremes are a better rolling tire.

    Ori is a Mezzo, right? I haven't looked at big apples on the strength of this
    Unfortunately this option is not open for the Mezzo - the Big Apple is not produced in a 349 16 inch wheel size, and even if it were, the mudguard clearances of the Mezzo would not permit such a tyre to be fitted.

    I had the Marathon+, but for some reason I kept getting punctures. It was an unholy terror to take on or off the bike. Replaced it with a Kojak, about half the price and so far couldn't have been happier. Increased speed, and I've managed to run over the same broken bottle 3 days in a row without puncturing it

    Calhoun Cycle has all of them. I strongly suggest them.

    The Ori has, what, 349s? As opposed to 305s? The best tire in this size, IMHO (and Vik will back this up) is the Greenspeed Scorcher TR (Kevlar). This guy. Note that this tire (which is a 349-40) won't fit on the back wheel of a Brompton due to stupidities in Brompton's frame design. Works fine on Tikits. I mention this to warn you that you'll need to make sure you can put a 40 tire on your Ori.

    The Scorcher is the most comfortable and probably the fastest tire in 349, it's also probably the grippiest, and the TR (Kevlar) version is thorn resistant. But it's likely not a long-lasting tire (as you know, you must compromise somewhere in your rubber compound choice). I've had mine for over a year in pretty grueling situations and it's held up.

    If you want a long-lasting thorn-resistant tire, try the Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Be warned that this is one slug of a tire, and far from comfortable. I for one would prefer to buy new tires every few years and be fast and comfortable.

    I tried Brompton's tire once, and I didn't find it to be very comfortable or fast. Might as well go Marathon in that case.

    Thanks again! after reading a bit more about the Marathon Plus, I am now inclining towards the Marathon standard 349.... Anyone familiar with it? The Koyaks are tempting but Im afraid of the possible lack of grip in wet surfaces....

    I run the Marathon Standard in a 406 and a 590. I have no complaints with them. I have been told that they are not as lively as the Supreme. But considering I normally only roll at a max speed of 15mph I really don't know if they are or not. I have very happy with the mileage and durability I have been getting out of the regular Marathons.

    Have you considered the Marathon Racer? It has about the same speed as Kojaks but with better grip.

    I've put a few thousand miles on the 20" Marathon Pluses on my Swift. The only punctures I've had on that bike are when I've taken those tires off and swapped the Primo Comets on.

    They're not particularly slow, either. I don't notice much difference between the two makes. This summer I didn't even bother putting the Comets on.

    Why? Slick tires (Kojaks, Scorchers, Primo Comets) have the most grip, wet or dry.

    Tread does not increase wet surface grip on roads etc. It decreases it.

    16" 305 tire is the one on BoB trailers, smaller rim, and a wider tire , 349 is a larger rim and thinner tire, Brompton and Bike Fri Tikits ... both are:"16".. "

    so what rim you got determines which you get .. ETRO number is on the tire 349-35 for example.

    Tire Contact patch on bikes is small water disburses easily , Car tires are a wider patch.

    it's unfortunately such a common misconception even among my friends that want treads cause they think it'll be slippery without it. I have the kojaks and they work amazingly on pavement.

    its much more the compound and the built of the undercarcasse of the tire which determines the slippiness on wet roads than any kind of profil ...
    with recomondations about 16 inch tires ... not all of them are actually available in the US .... and you have extremely bigger selection for 20 inchers ... meaning with 16 inch one has to pick whats abavilable more often than with 20 ...

    Scroll down the the Kojak.

    Wet grip is 4 out of 5 but winter grip is only 1 out of 5. The difference may be the mud.

    Compare this for example with the 3 out of 5 of Marathon HS.

    I live in California, when I added shipping, I found the UK dealers marginally lower cost than USA dealers. The postage is eyewatering high but Schwalbe in USA is also very high.

    Make sure you get Plus for all wheels, I initially thought I'd have one on rear as that gets most punctures, but got a flat on front. Since moved to the Plus, not had a flat for nearly 3 years, on my Brompton.

    UK dealer to compare - they ship international, two tires shipped to USA is $101

    I got a 349 pair from Bike Friday in Oregon, they build their Tikkit with Brompton spec rims.

    and there are several Brompton US dealers .. Schwalbe is an Optional tire.

    By passing thru a German warehouse, first,
    there are several layers of currency exchange transactions to add to the price.
    .. Banking charges ..
    OEM pricing is 25% of retail , if you are a manufacturer of bicycles.

    when comparing prices one should be careful ..... wire bead versus Kevlar bead is a HUGE price difference
    also in some countries a reflective stripe is not standard whereas its a good additional safety item to have and it costs extra

    Snow. Snow is a different beast entirely.

    Also the Kojak's listed as 5/5 on wet grip.

    Thor is right that rubber compound makes a lot of difference. But all other things being the same, a slick tire is grippiest on the road in dry or rain conditions.

    [BTW, there is no true snow tire in 349 at all].
