Sturmey Archer hub models X and S - flange height?

I've just noticed that the hub that I've got on my Vitesse ( X-RF5) is 140 grams heavier than the S (low flange) version. Why would anyone choose the high-flange model over the low? OK, extra spoke length will add a bit more weight but not 140 grams.
