Aftermarket Brakes for a Twenty with 451's

Mine are some heavy steel brakes and I would like to put some lighter newer brakes on the twenty with 451 rims.

I'm hoping these will work on my 451 rims:

https://www.rivbike.com/products/show...outh-73/15-151

But I haven't built it up yet, so I can't tell for sure that they will.

They come in a bolt-on nutted, which I got, and recessed allen version, which I don't think is right for the Twenty.

Thanks Harlond... I just wasted 35 minutes on Rivbike.com! I love looking at all the goodies there about once a month.

converted my Twenty 451 to Single Speed
weight is down to 21.5lbs=9.7kgs

the weinmann 810 didn't have quite enough reach on the rear wheel a flip flop hub with Alex R390 semi aero rims so i filed the brake frame mouting hole about 1mm and it worked
the front caliper is ok as evident on the photo i posted above the front wheel has a stock Raleigh hub and Sun assault SL-1 rims

Ii believe the portable is also a lighter frame. I just missed one that was in mint condition for $150. What type of stem does it have? I would like to find a long one like that. Are the handle bars flipped?

quill/stem is a Nitto Technomic although a Periscopa will be fitting as well, bars are flipped Nitto Northroad type.

this is the before photo when I got the bike 3 years ago minus the fenders

purple? like to see that..

anyway for the rear brake just gently "unfold " the fender tab so it runs flush with the brake mount. Then just mount your short reach caliper on that same hole the fender used to hang from. You must also add a little brace with a hole in it. to support the brake from the back side of the seat stays. This way I am able to run '80's era Campagnolo brakes & they stop right.

will post photo

also: may have to drill it out slightly,
don't remember...

great idea Kraftwerk a quick method instead of doing a drop-bolt solution.

here's a link to the purple beauty not mine though

The link shows Tektro R365 brakes. I can now state that with 451 wheels, these brakes will work on the Raleigh Twenty. However, if you're planning to use the Pletscher rack, you'll need to fashion a drop plate. The R365s will not work in the normal brake plate hole if you attach the rack to the same plate. Installed in the normal brake plate hole, one of the brake arms is stymied by the rack. I tried putting the brake in front of the seat stays, but then the pads didn't reach the rim. It appeared that if I could angle the brakes downward from the brake plate, they might reach. So I used as a washer a half-inch piece of copper pipe, on one end of which I'd ground an angle. That helped, but not enough. So then I made a drop plate. Did not need any more than half-inch of drop. But anyway, with the drop plate, I can install the brake behind the seat stays, as is typical, and not have any interference between rack and brake or brake and tire. I hope I never want to install fenders.

for CCM R20s, it seems like ISO 451 won't work on the rear, even if you use tektro's long reach callipers.

I had to make a drop bolt for my R20 out of shelving hardware.

the shelving hardware will also double up as mounting points for fenders.

I don't know what a CCM Twenty is, but the Tektro R365s would have worked on my Twenty, no modification necessary, if I had been willing to go with a different rack.

Very clever idea on the drop bolt, I wish I'd thought of that before I started making one.

An .02, putting a V brake rubber bellows tube [it goes in between the arms on a V brake]
on the brakes with an upturned housing path
will reduce the rate that water pools in the bottom of that section of housing,
and rusts the brake cable into immobility.
A common problem with step thru frames/women's bikes.

I did that with brakes on My Old Brompton, the new ones sell that way.

sorry, I meant supercycle, not CCM.
It's the canadian version R20.
