Rear Hub for Dahon Curve D3

hi all,

anyone have any idea where i can get an 8 speed rear hub to fit on a dahon curve d3 ? i know that the curve has 113mm rear spacing and almost all the hubs available are 130-135mm or longer. i plan on changing the 3 speed IGH into an 8 speed gears. what did they use on the curve SL (8 speed gear) ? and also for the front hub. i plan on building a new 36H wheel, too.

thanks,
vic

I thought the OLD on those SRAM 3 speeds was 130.

I believe the Curve D3's OLD and the OLD of the SRAM T3 hub it uses are both nominally 120mm.

As a matter of fact I do.

Did older versions use a sturmey hub with narrower OLD? Edit: the curve appeared to use a Sturmey 3 speed hub prior to 2008.

My curve d3 has the SRAM 3. As much as possible I want to put sprocket gears and not IGH.

I saw more than once, at the LBS, some d3 that has been converted to a shimano capreo 9 speed.
it seems possible, but looking closely at how 'dished' the right side of the wheel was, I am a bit worried about the strength. the spokes are 'flat'..

i got an email from dahon. curve d3 rear spacing is 120mm and not design for rear derailleur as the dropouts will not take it.

There are derailleurs and hangers that attach to the axle but I don't see the point on a 16" wheel bike. You'd need a massive chainring to get high enough gearing.

all the while i thought sturmey archer (8 speed) has 120mm spacing, but when i googled it shows OLD 135mm. sram dual drive is also OLD 135mm. so that means i can't use them also.

If you're really serious about this, follow the link I gave you in post #3.

BTW, you don't want to build an ISO305 wheel 36 spoke.

Why not go with the SL as they are the same price now the Capreo or the IGH at Thors.

They have nice components and lighter.

There's a 120mm version of the X-RF8. They have different axle length versions of all hubs.

i know. i was trying to do the equation (if i go IGH) and it will not make sense anymore. getting the SL will be a better choice (if i can sell this Curve, though).

yes. i just googled it. this will work but i have to do the math - upgrade the D3 that will cost me almost the same amount as thor's 8 speed Nexus IGH. i guess i could sell my Curve and just get the SL or something else as the 3 speed is not cutting in for my casual ride here in SF.

i was hoping i could go the cheaper way of regular 8 speed gears but no option there. only IGH will work for my upgrade.

THANKS to EVERYONE for the INPUTS......

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that it would fit as I knew it was 135mm. I have had some experience of these hubs............

hi all,

JUST AN UPDATE:
for now i will abandon this dahon curve d3 gearing upgrade as it's not really worth it. if i bought my curve for $100 then it's all worth it (but i did not). it will cost me almost the same price as a new curve sl to upgrade.

thanks guys..
