Mr & Mrs lexm brave sub-freezing temps, ride folders on Thanksgiving

What better way to start a Thanksgiving morning than 17 miles roundtrip on the north side of Chicago's lakefront bike path? (Apologies for cell phone quality pics.)

Mrs lexm models her Walz cycling cap with ear flap and the Sugoi HOV commuter jacket - the only cycling jacket we've found that doesn't look like a cycling jacket (hence Mrs lexm's attraction to it). She is riding a Strida LT.

A smiling Mrs lexm takes pleasure in the fog obscuring the top of the John Hancock Building.

Mr and Mrs lexm commemorate their first Thanksgiving ride together, obscuring most of Navy Pier in the process. Mr lexm's Chicago cycling cap is made by a local designer who doesn't put a label in her finished product. (!) He bought it at Rapid Transit Cycle Shop. He completes his look with the BlackCoat Work SFO jacket by Koyono.

Brompton M1R and Strida LT perform flawlessly throughout. Mr lexm's blood glucose is a mere 88 upon returning home. We look forward to riding again (weather permitting) on Thanksgiving 2011.

nice pics, i've walked there and chicago has a really really nice cycling trail all along their coast with navy pier somewhere in the middle of it. I guess if you did right along the entire chicago it would probably take a chunk of the day. Looks like great weather! up here in the north it's been raining for the last week and my strida is just about done for the season cause there's threats of snow after the rain. lovely!

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. I sat in an office on T-day. No bus service to get me there 'cause of the holiday, so no riding

On a good note, I finally saw another bike commuter where I work in Germantown, MD, which for those outside the DC area is about 24 miles north of the city, where the suburbs start to give way to country. I had previously only ever seen one commuter up this way, distinctive in his hi-viz jersey. The guy I saw just the other day was commuting locally I think, but it was nice to see another idiot out in sub-30 degree weather!

Good on ya Lexm and the missus for braving the elements beneath Big John and his taller cousin Sears. Now if you can just do something about the spaceship that landed on top of Soldier Field...

nice pics. i applaud you for your braveness. how many times have i tried to ride in a freezing morning but will always end up grabbing my car keys to go to work. i know it just a matter of time as i see so many bikers on a train. if they can do it i should be able to do it also, right?

You anger the Bikr Gods, Vman! Don't you know that no-one on this site drives a car (other than a Prius), eats inorganic tofu, uses plastic bags, forgets to recycle, or pees in the ocean?

ooops and deng - i do all those stuff. pardon me sir for my ignorance. hope i am forgiven. i will not do it again please please...... on a sidenote - i only drive about 2 miles to the bus station from my house and from there it's mostly public transportation all the way to my work. total hours of my commute one way and door to door is 2.5-3 hours (depending on the bus/bart schedule). am i forgiven now for being green 95% of my commute ???

Just to be clear, are you saying that your commute is 2.5-3 hours each way? That "and door to door" comment is confusing me...

Yes. That's correct. 2.5-3 hours one way. Distance is 60 miles one way. door to door is i will leave home @ 4:30am (if i am driving to the bus station) and will be at my work's door @ 7:15am or 7:30am. if i am riding my bike i will leave @ 4:15 am and will be at work 7:15 or 7:30am.

you ride your bike 60miles each way? that's over a century a day! you sir are a machine! no bionic augmentations? (electric motor). Cause if I did that I'd slap on a pretty darn big battery and motor! I never even thought about putting in that much miles a day on a bike going to work!

    .

oh no. i may have stated it not clearly. if i ride my bike i only do it the first 2 miles of my commute and the rest i take bus-train-bus-light rail train. i wouldn't dare do the 60 mile trip as it will take me about 6 hours to do it. although i wish i could but am not a mean machine nor a bionic man (again i hope i am). thanks....
