    The Next-Mod-to-My-Folder Thread

Let's face facts: Things are getting slow and narrowly technical around here. Wherefore, I propose a new thread: the next-mod-to-my-folder thread.

    The rules:

    1) Identify your folder.

    2) Share the next modification you plan for your folder and explain why.

    3) Bonus points if you refer to your last modification to the same folder.

    I'll start:

After installing successfully a Megahorn [satisfies rule 3, above] on my Brompton M1R [satisfies rule 1, above] so that Chicago's more self-absorbed motorists can hear me coming, my next project is to find an elegant way to mount a bottle cage [satisfies the first part of rule 2, above]. As Mrs lexm and I have been taking longer rides, the need for ready, on-bike hydration is becoming acute [satisfies second part of rule 2].

    There! That was easy.

What mods do you have on deck?

I think a picture (before/after when relevant) of the mod should also be expected.

I have 3 bikes rotating through the work stand at the moment as parts trickle in. Currently only one of my five folders is on that list.

I started a thread on it here. Parts are on order.

However, I have been breaking down cleaning and regreasing things like the head set, oiling and cleaning latches and hinges, cleaning and lubricating V brakes...and waiting on freakin' parts!

    So now..by the rules:

    1. Rolling Rock Promo/2002 Dahon Mariner 26
    2. Build Wheels, old ones are weak and I am putting on a Nexus 8 speed and a front dyno hub.

I can't really think of anything to mod on my dahon.
I do need to grind down the BB for my R20
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

I think this thread would do for minor mods to your bike but not major ones. Pics definitely needed on the thread or it can start to read "walking dead" dull.

Sybil (my R20) will soon be getting:

    1. New wheel reflectors (so cars can really see me before they hit me)
    2. Raleigh head badge (for bragging rights)

However, in the meantime, she needs to go to the bike doc to get her wheels trued. She has a slight wobble that is driving me crazy. Nope folks I ain't attempting that fix on my own.

If she's good to me, she'll eventually get next year:

    1. New alloy wheels - To make her lighter
    2. Big apple tires - Comfort for my tush
    2. 5 or 7 or 8 speed hub/shifter - For more speed variation.

Here's Sybil now. Except for that wobble she's doing okay. I've gotten use to the weight and using both brakes when I stop. Those Kool Stop Continental brake pads make such a difference.

    1. I have a mega-millions lottery ticket. Its folded up in my wallet.
    2. After I win I will convert it to a Bike Friday per week and a Moulton per month(its harder to find Moultons)
    3. The last lottery ticket I had didn't win so I converted it to trash.

    Bike - Bridgestone Moulton

    New mod:

    Reason:

Picking up the repaired frame on Wednesday! Will need to match the pearl white paint, but hoping that's not too bad.

I'm really eager to get her up and running again. It's still a gorgeous bike, even though the design is suspect...

    1) Dahon Speed Pro TR. 2008 Overstock from ThorUSA (Thanks Thor!)

    2) Mod to do (just thoughts for now no real need to)
    - Dahon Traveler Rack - Maybe for other pannier. I keep thinking about few Ortlieb panniers but even front roller doesn't clear my heel with current one I have.
    - Some way to possibly lower the handle bar a little more.
    - 10 speed conversion on derailleur part. Shifter, chain, derailleur, cassette. Bit pricey but It would give me more room to play with without having to go into less efficient low or high part of IGH of dual drive. Also is that I find I would love to have just a little more granular jump in gearing. Not required obviously but would be wonderful I think.

    3) Things I've done.
    - Swapped Supernova E3 Light in place of stock Halogen dyno light. Wire is mesh sleeved for protection. Wonderful and best upgrade due to my commute in dark.
    - Rear light changed to blinking one. Front and Rear see me blinking light or fork and stay. (so 4 lights total... 1 to see, 3 to be seen).
    - Selle Italia SL seat. While stock Aria was comfy I found it bothering too much with my sensitive part about 30 minutes into ride. No more of that and I can generate power better in Selle.
    - Front brake replaced with KoolStop Salmon pad. Improvement albeit minor. I haven't swapped rear one as I use front brake only for.... 80% of time.
    - Greenspeed Scorcher Tires. While big apple was uber comfy, I felt it was sapping my power. I was partially right in this. I definitely accelate faster, tend to stay about .5-1.5mph faster with same effort. (Most improvement on flat or downhill) Comfort did decrease but it's definitely acceptable. One thing though, it is smaller in diameter which makes already low derailleur closer to the ground as well as less clearance on my crankset.
    - Attachment to bike: Ortlieb saddle bag, Topeak Alien 2 tool bag on handlebar, Cat eye wireless speed/cadence computer.
    - The labor part of mod which I think was really important compared to few up for my enjoyment of bicycle: Trueing/dishing of wheel, proper tightening of bottom, and reworking the dual drive hub. I noticed slight drag on it which should not be there and ended up overhauling the thing. It's now running silky smooth

Riding it 100-150 miles a week helps justifying spending money on some parts for me for time being.

    Got another one for you...

    This one is a conversion

I am converting a 1996 Ford Crew Cab Dually PSD to a Bike Friday New World Tourist AND a Brompton. (BTW I may end up with some cash left over )

    Here is the current format...

i spent the past week working on my dahon jack.
my next set of mods planned for spring will be to change out the handlebar for either a set of drop bars, or bullhorns, so this will mean changing the brakes and shifters.
the mods i did last week were: swapped out the front single crank to 44/52, added a front derailleur and thnumb shifter, swapped out the factory grip shift to thumb shifter for rear derailleur, and swapped out with a shorter straight bar handle bar. also removed the stock pedals for folding pedals for better convenience.

i have shown my bike's mods before but i would love to add it to this thread. mine is what you might call a drastic action/mods. i used to have a 29.5lbs Dahon speed TR 2009 model that is now what i may call a +/- 20 lbs Dahon Speed TR Pro. the mods i did are the following:

    1) Changed Schwalbe big apple 20x2.0 to Schwalbe Kojak 20x1.35
    2) Changed Dahon Dyno Hub to Dahon Kinetix Pro S wheel
    3) Changed Biologic postpump seatpost to a gold alloy CNC Turner seatpost without pump
    4) Changed Biologic Aria to Selle Italia XO saddle
    5) Changed Dahon Kinetix handlebar to Ritchey flat handlebar (trimmed 2 inches)
    6) Changed Ergon MR2 with bar end to Ergon GP1 without bar end
    7) Changed MKS Ezy pedals to MKS FD-6
    8) Added one Stella L&M headlight, one Cree P4 160 lumens Headlight, and one Cateye headlight
    9) Added VIewpoint 1/2 Watt Ultra tailight and Viewpoint 5 led rearlight
    10) Added Topek bottle holder
    11) Replaced Sugino crankset to Shimano 105 52/39T Double crankset and i added Driveline chain guard
    12) Replaced KMC chain to SRAM chain
    13) Removed front and rear racks
    14) Added handlepost pump

My Dahon Speed TR went from this:
    DSCF2512.jpg

    To this:
    IMGP1598A.jpg

    next mod - still thinking.

    @Aaron: That's my favorite kind of conversion - and it's a two-for-one!

@badrad: I think you did more last week than I've done since buying my first folder in August.

@vmaniqui: Wow! It's okay if you think a bit about the next mod.
