    Folder RS2C Project

After several months of deciding and selling all of my other folding bikes. I have decided to upgrade the Raleigh Folder. I started by ordering the SA S2C hub and and 451 rim is being built for me and I should have it by next week. The bike was in almost new condition and to get the project going I sold the original 451 wheelset. I have installed an alloy seatpost. I am going to stay with the original cranks. I dont want to file down the dropouts so on the rear the SA hub will fit but I need to find a hub for the front, any ideas? This started when Bruce Metras and Sesamecrunch started their duomatic builds. Because of my job loss last year and just getting back into the workforce the Dahon Uno and the gorgeous TSR S2 were out of the the budget. The Folder was acquired last year after I sold the Stowaway.

    Hi,
You can either spread the front fork to fit a modern hub or find a bike shop that has a vintage 90mm hub and build the wheel around that hub. That is what I did because I didn't want to spread the fork.R20fw.JPG

I will be doing the same as veloceleste with my R20--using my front hub with new rim and spokes. My hub is in good shape and I prefer the way it looks.

I went with cold setting the front forks to accept a 100mm hub.

I'll have a S2C hub freed up over the next week or so, just itchin' to be build into a wheel for a folder. Still got the frame...?

OK, so DC has shipped the frameset off to me, due to arrive later this week. I got a S2C hub coming out of another wheel because someone's buying the rim. Plan is to go the Phil route with the bb, get a S/A X-FD hub for the front.

Question #1: Can the frame and fork take a 2" 406 tire? Rim size (width) is going to depend on the answer: if yes, RhynoLite rims; if somewhere south of 2", a narrower Velocity offering...

Arrived today. Here's the "Before" pic:

    R20 before.JPG

Came with more than expected -- thanks, DC! Cranks w/ bb; headset w/ stem clamp.

I'll be doing some kind of headset mod with bearings at the top, probably replacing the lower as well. I think I'll stick with the stock fork.

BB is kinda crunchy, will need to get in there and take a look. Right crank appears bent and I wanted to go with a more modern sq taper crank anyway. Was planning on full ($$$) Phil Wood bb treatment, but if the bearing races are in decent shape, might reuse the cups, see if there's an axle I can use that will work kicking around the shop. Failing that, I also recently inherited an older Shimano DA 7400 bb with no threads which might be pressed into service.

Looks like 2" tire will be asking more than the bike can give. Will go for wide road rims, not BMX.

Sweet! Questions: what do you have going on with the stem setup? Looks like extension + a riser quill stem? And what tire size -- 406/451? Lookks like about 1.5" width?

Currently on vacation, next week will be heavy work week, week after I will be welding a full size frame together, so project is on hold at the moment. Rims being ordered Tuesday, have decided to go with a S/A X-FD drum front hub. Since I have access to shop tools and am a mechanic, will be trimming down the bb and rethreading to 24tpi. If the threads won't reliably hold a regular bb, I'll go the Velo-Orange route.

What is the stock seatpost diameter?

The seatpost is 28.6. The stem I found at our local Hub community bike coop. I think it is a Cinelli. The stem has a long stem. The rims are 451. Tires are 1 1/8.

What kind of hub? 3/8 or 9mm qr? did you have to file the forks or the axle? I am looking to put something sealed up front.
