    Brompton 5 speed Rear wheel rebuild question?

    I am about to rebuild the rear wheel for an older 5 speed Brompton. The current wheel has 13Ga spokes. Does anyone know if I can use 2.34/2.0 butted spokes without having problems at the rim where the holes are drilled. Are the holes specifically drilled for a larger nipple and will the use of a smaller nipple cause problems?

    Are you going for the 18" rim/conventional road bike caliper upgrade or just upgrading the hub and keeping the rims?

    Just replacing a damaged rim and thought I would use 13/14ga. butted spokes if the standard Brompton rims can take the nipple for the 14ga end. Was not intending to replace the brakes or replacing the hub. Just trying to hold cost down.

    Replacement Brompton rims aren't front or rear specific, so standard 14G nipples are fine.

    Pondering building up a wheel around the new SRF5W, which is offered in 28 hole
    and 111 ready to use in a Brompton ,
    its an aW3 for the middle gears 33%, and 2 that are 20% over and under those .

    calculated I gain a tall high and a 1:1 low,and a redundant cross over gear with my Mountain drive crank
    where the range shift is H/L<>L/H..

    OTOH just broke a spoke on my steel shell AW3. [maybe jealousy when the Bike fridayLlama was delivered]

    so Ask others experience with a brass washer to make up the difference between the thin steel flange, and the spokes made optimized for alloy flanges.

    Galvanized spoke has a shorter hook , stainless the curve longer , for the wider flange.

    (could also just order a set of Zn plated spokes from SJS 8 time zones to the east)

    Fietsbob,

    Are you staying with 13 ga. spokes? Ive decided to go to the butted only because nipples for 14 ga. spokes are easier to get than for the 13 ga. spokes. Convenient when nipples gets stripped. I called a shop today that carries Bromptons and they only sell nipples for the 13 ga. spokes with the spokes.

    I Don't know, You got a shop or 2 that is just a subway ride away, I don't.

    Or the stainless ones, thru dealers in Portland, 150 miles away or Palo Alto in another state.

    !3/14 is probably a custom cut and thread rolling project,
    taking a Wheelsmith 13/14 butted spoke for big wheels
    and cutting and threading by rolling in the threads, each.
    some shops own a Phil Wood Shop tool to do that.

    Yes they are custom cut. I'm going to use DT Swiss Alpine 13/14 and not the Wheelsmith DH13's though. Found a good deal on them, now just have to get them cut & rolled.

    I could get some extra cut and ship them, but I'm afraid it's going to be more expensive than ordering straight 13 ga. spokes from SJS even though it'll probably be less thanwhat SJS is charging for their 13/14 ga. set.

    Mine is largely a Utility Bike, so quadrupling the cost of the parts is not in the cards.

    Probably just get the Zn coated.spokes , path of least resistance.

    I don't know how much you ride in the rain (I'm assuming fairly often in Oregon), but I paid about $20 for SS spokes custom cut. I had to cut some a bit shorter, because the PW machine doesn't go short enough for the Brommie wheels.

    I tend to use as much stainless as possible to avoid corrosion (I'm in Seattle).

    need to investigate the filler washer, more, steel flanges 1/2 the thickness of aluminum
    so bend in the hook needs the washers to support it like the thicker flange would

    I worked in a shipyard , we were attaching sacrificial zinc ingots all the time.
    seawater attacks the Zn 1st, and not the steel hull of the ships.
