Did a mini folding bike tour the last few days. We were on Bromptons and our friends were on Dahon TRs. Great time was had by all.
I wonder why you guys didn't choose Dahon TRs which are less expensive than the Brompton. The folding size isn't much larger and Amtrak would not notice the difference in size. When you think about it, the TR's are using the Sram Dual drive where you can get incredible low gears.
Regardless, those hills had everyone walking. How would you compare hill combing on the Brompton compared to the LHT?
FWIW, I run a Schlumpf Mountain drive Crank, on my 3 speed Brompton.
low range takes up where high range left off , 6 speeds total. 17" low
Todd put a double chainset on his newer M-6, 36/44 combo .. somewhat lower range..
with the BWR rear 6 speed and standard 13/15 external switcher.
But sometimes its just more pleasant to have a nice casual stroll up a hill,
rather than twiddling a short development gear.
Great video! You did a nice job of capturing the feeling of climbing. How was the descent with regards to little wheels, fully loaded bikes, brake/rim heating?

Cool video! I'm trying to convince my wife folders are the way to go. I love my Brompton for commuting and riding. It is more fun and entertaining than my previous 13 bikes :)
nice video. i see more people using folding bikes here in san francisco bay area (bart train) than when i started more than a year ago. when i started it's just me and my folding bike. now they're everywhere. Good sign or maybe due to gas prices.
I had a Dahon TR for a while and while I enjoyed it (one of the Dahons in the video is actually my old one), the fold just isn't very neat or small. Below is a photo of our two Bromptons and our friends' Dahon TRs and our respective gear next to each other waiting for the bus. I think the size difference is considerable and prob. prohibitive to a cranky train conductor.
We were able to ride up the hills with the Bromptons, prob. due more to the fact that we're use to lots of hills. Our Bromptons have the -12% reduced gearing option which puts its low gear at 29 gear inches. With a double chain ring mod, the low gear is 23 gear inches.
The Bromptons are ok climbers. Not great but they do surprisingly well. The small wheels don't maintain rolling momentum very well going up hill, so you are always exerting effort. That said, with bar ends and wider pedals we are able to climb while standing relatively well.
Nice video! One question I have is are you using clipless pedals on the Brompton for touring and if so, which one?
Problem is it being a folder, most think it cant make it up hills,so i suppose im doing folders a disservice. Im starting to feel guilty already.
