Dahon Mu Uno
Does anyone have any experience with the Dahon Mu Uno? I think that it looks awesome and the ease of folding and use is like no other. I would primarily use the bike for short hops/commutes when I don't want to use my full size road bike or other cycling gear. Is a single speed bike a bad idea for that use? All opinions welcome

Great idea and a IGH hub with more speeds can always be added later. There are a couple of Unos with the 2 speed hub. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ghlight=mu+uno

I really dig my Mu Uno when riding it on short trips using it in conjunction with the local train. The single speed makes it simple and no need to worry about bending a derailleur transporting it when folded.
IMHO, the Mu Uno frame is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than the Speed Uno but to each his own.

Much luck finding a Mu Uno ...I havent seen one since a LOOOONG time....
I think the Speed Uno is the better buy anyhow ,,,yes its a smitten heavier. But it is also quite a bit more affordable.... gives you extra money to modify it...
the official pics are somewhat dull and not very nice ...the actual bike is MUCH nicer than the pics on the web

Speed Uno is a much better buy, because by adding say a S2C dual coaster hub laced wheel, it brings the price up a bit but still less than a Mu Uno. While it is a little heavier than the Mu, the slung over weight using my Dahon Carry On sack is not noticeable. It is noticeable only when you lift it up unfolded. Weight is not a concern riding mostly on flats.
My wish is for Dahon to introduce the Dahon Speed Duo at the same price as the Speed Uno, but equip it with a S2C hub and low direct gearing plus slightly higher hub gearing for decent hill climbing and flat riding. I think that will sell better and I don't need to mod and have a spare wheel. Dahon or Tern, are you listening?!? I have money to buy.
I rode both the Mu and Speed Unos briefly and I can say that the Mu is slightly stiffer like my Mu SL. The Speed is good too, but unless you're used to attacking a hill with a 53T/19 on a 700c road bike which I do quite often, you will not notice a difference in stiffness. Besides, it is not a good idea to ride standing up with folder bikes which you will do more often with these single bikes if you are not already a strong rider. If you are already riding mostly with a 53T chain ring on the hill and or cruising up with a 39T with your road bike, then I suggest getting the Speed as you'll be doing more sitting down riding the single speed bike. If you're going up the hill with a 39T and or a 34T on a compact chaing ring on a regular road bike and wanting more granny gear, then get the Mu as you'll be standing up more and would appreciate the added frame stiffness.
Hope this helps.

So this Tern Verge Duo looks nice. So does this ride nicer than my Dahon Mu SL?

it should ride with very little flex from the review of the testers.
https://bikehugger.com/post/view/tern-bicycles-photos
also it's the second pic, with the guy posing on it. that's the verge, sexy lil bike eh? The frame looks pretty much like the mu uno but with a beefier hinge and a auto kickback 2 speed hub.
It's really unfortunate with this lawsuit messing around which we might not even get to see these bikes out by september with most of their time focusing on the lawsuit instead of the bikes.

Thanks to all for the links. Hope the lawsuit ends well quickly. Certainly do not need this to impede upon progress!

The Sachs/SRAM Automatic 2 speed hub is not a kickback (to shift) hub like the Sturmey S2C, S2, the Sachs Duomatic or the Bendix kickback 2 speed hubs (which require a backward motion of the crank to shift) .. the Sachs/SRAM Automatic hubs shift by centrifugal force .. the wheel rpm gets to a certain speed and then it shifts, automatically, up or down (depending on wheel speed rotation)..

I live in a hilly area, short to medium steep hills. I have no problems riding around on errands in my local town. If I had to ride further like to the next town I'd ride a geared bike. That's not to say it can't be done on the Mu Uno but you'll have a good work out with the one gear. I wouldn't hesitate to ride the bike on flat terrain or in conjunction with public transportation.
If you're going longer distances without the use of a bus or train or ride in hilly terrain, by all means get a multi geared folder. Your legs will thank you.
