Folders at PBP
Just wandered past the start location of Paris-Brest-Paris this morning (actually starts Sunday evening and Monday morning) and met a few folk with Moultons (separable), Ritchey Breakaway (same), S&S-coupled (ditto), Bike Fridays and a German with a Brompton. I can't recall his name offhand but he wanted to ride something different for his fifth PBP. He isn't the first to tackle PBP on a Brommie (that would be Tal in 2007) but this fellow's bike is virtually stock, just a couple of bottle cages ziptied to the stem and seatpost.

as long as you have a good gear range and determination with a good saddle it's totally doable on a 16 inch folder. We need a good gear range cause it's not as stiff as a fix frame single speed where you can just mash it up the rolling hills standing.

There was a lady rider who did the PBP on a Moulton Pashley TSR a few years back, a bike that's a tad more suitable I guess, but you still have to endure small wheels on some appalling surfaces. These people are real heros in my book.

That would be Chloe in 2003 on a Pylon, not a TSR. I'm starting my third PBP Randonneur on little wheels tomorrow, my fourth in all. I also rode PBP Audax on a Moulton 2 weeks ago, suspension makes little wheels quite nice.

I've only ridden PBP once (in '91) and I doubt I'll ever attempt it again, but I am sincerely impressed that anyone could finish it under 90 hr. on a folding bike of any type (or a fixed gear, which a friend of mine did this year)!
Congratulations to anyone who finishes P-B-P and especially on a folder! Rick / OCRR |
Well, 4 of 5 Moulton riders finished, 2 of us well under our 84 hr limit. I rode about half the distance with an Aussie on a Bike Friday, he made round. The Bromptoneer made it too.
The unlikely ones included Sophie on her Dutch roadster with flowers in her front basket and rear panniers, Drew on his 1900 racer with wooden rims and the triplet powered by German brothers. They all finished. |
hats off to all of you!
